ok, they want you to sound ‘high class’? I hope they’re not trying to showoff their status.. just speak the language you’re comfortable with as long as you are ‘polite’..
and it’s really nice of you to love our language =)
I don’t know why your parents want you to speak English. When i was in mexico i spoke some english to my brother but cause i was comfy. I spoke mostly spanish because that was the home language.
you speak whatever you are comfortable with, ignore you mom in this case.
be yourself always
i dont know what’s your mother thinking about speaking in english… but im telling you that be yourself… speak what ever language you desire…
You happen to have typical Filipino parents.
You already answer your question. "Because according to your parents, speaking in English will make you look and sound high class"
In that case, you have an "aristocrat" type of family.
You have to be yourself. You have the right to speak in any language you want.
cuz in d philippines the ab class speak mostly english. or when they spaek taglish, it is mostly english (like 90%). when the middle class speak taglish, english is around 20-30% of the words.
really old-rich families speak nothing but english (or spanish). even gloria diaz was criticized by the masa when she famously declared then that they only speak in tagalog, or try to, when they speak to their maids.
really? you’re parents sound a bit… snobish, i think is the word. when i’m in the philippines my parents encourage me to speak tagalog, even though i have a horrible accent and bad grammer.
anyway, just being from the states makes you look high class. in my experience, people are more mezmerized by kids from the states that can speak tagalog.
just forgive your parents… in my opinion you know what’s right and in this case, just thank the Lord that he gave you the wisdom to know what’s right and a little understanding would be enough to thank Him. hope this helps.
Love, respect and cherish your parents. Do this, and you will live a long, fulfilling life.
In their presence, speak the King’s English, and with a mighty British accent, and tell your friends what is expected of you by your parents. So that in the middle of a conversation, when you suddenly acquire the talents of Sir Laurence Olivier, they’ll know your old folks are around.
And they, too, will suddenly acquire British accents and talk about how you can’t choose your parents.
