Although unlike Singaporeans, Filipinos have this fetish to be colonized and it's embedded in their attitudes. Haven't you noticed that when english isn't the first language of asians in general (those who don't live in an english-speaking western country), they tend to adapt an american-style accent? But in regards to the "American-English" topic, perhaps they are merely stating the difference between "American" and "Australian" English, the same way some people insist on differentiating "American English" and "British English."
