Why do Filipinos say they speak American-English when in actuality they speak Filipino-English? The accent…?
just curious... and yes I know about the American occupation there and everything, but we here in Australia don't say we speak english like the people in England. There is clearly a difference. I work with some Americans and Filipinos and there is a noticable difference. My Filipino collegues insist that they speak American-English and none of us here in the office have said a word otherwise. Just curious...

Thank Hollywood for that. And semi US occupation a couple decades ago. Similar thing happened with Singaporeans, they have this British tinge in their accents, but don’t actually claim it to be British-English. Although unlike Singaporeans, Filipinos have this fetish to be colonized and it’s embedded in their attitudes.
Haven’t you noticed that when english isn’t the first language of asians in general (those who don’t live in an english-speaking western country), they tend to adapt an american-style accent?
I think because what Pinoys mean by Filipino-English is something called Taglish [ Tagalog + English ]. It means that part of the sentence is Tagalog [ Philippine language ] and some part english .
Ex.
Taglish: You’re so tanga !
English: You’re so stupid !
American-English probably means that the whole sentence is English . I think we call our accent American-English because we adopt most of our English speaking and we are mostly influenced by the Americans . I think it’s because we don’t change our words into "lift" for elevator or "crisps" for chips [ Not trying to be racist ! ] . Hope this helps

Yes, there is a noticeable [some will say 'jumping out at you'] difference between Filipino English and everyday American English, however, if you compare the Filipino English with Singaporean English or Aussie English, the Filipino English is much closer to American English than the British influenced English as in Singapore and Australia ..
So many words are different between British English and American — if you go to England and use an elevator, they call it ‘Lift’, as they do in Sinapore or Sydney .. but in Manila, they also call it elevator ..
I`m not sure what difference you`re referring to. But in regards to the "American-English" topic, perhaps they are merely stating the difference between "American" and "Australian" English, the same way some people insist on differentiating "American English" and "British English."
It’s just to say we learn our english pronounciation, spelling and terminology from the American in contrast to Bristish English.
