Learning Tagalog is just like learning any other languages. These are just some tips i can give you..<:

-read books and listen to speeches, more like continually hearing and reading the language..
if you are just starting to learn the language you can read stories and books written for children, or books with CDs on learning the language..

-communicate with friends who speak the language, but if you are not near anyone who speaks Tagalog you can go over the internet and communicate with Filipino speakers.. so you can use what you’ve learned from the books..

-have a Tagalog-English Dictionary and English-Tagalog dictionary.

- you can also use other internet resources like broadcasts you can listen to, and web sites..or you can also watch movies in Tagalog

-you can also enroll in classes that offers the language but for me self study and perseverance works better..

-just remember: constant correct practice..

I suggest you combine all these techniques to make your language learning more effective..<:

Like any other languages, get a formal lesson in Tagalog, then practice conversing in Tagalog everyday.

Go to a book store. There are plenty of self teaching courses for tagalog. Buy a tagalog-english dictionary.

That’s what I am doing and I am making progress.
Its takes time and practice.

I had the same question when I wanted to learn Nihongo. My Japanese instructor told me I should get myself a Japanese girlfriend. I wanted to learn so bad, I got myself eight of them. One for each day of the week. Plus a spare.

Rosetta-Stone has good language courses. You learn faster because they use picture/word association.

To comment on some of the answers, to be around Pinoys does not help, because they do not bother to take much time to instruct you. As far as marrying one goes, my wife does not want to do it either and speaks such good English that I really don’t HAVE to learn. She will tell me phrases and stuff, but does not go out of her way. That is the best darn Tagalog page I have ever dealt with. Now dont’ get me wrong, you will have to study it, but it does help to have Flip friends/wife to help with pronunciation and grammar. Ideally you should have both study material and friends.

The most practical way is to study the language. The Peace Corps has beginner, intermediate and advanced courses. They were published by the University of Hawaii Press. You can buy them on line.

Try to learn the basic Tagalog words through Tagalog-English dictionaries, books, & through the internet & practice your tagalog when you get to Philippines. (–,)
