Tagalog is the second of two official languages, of the Philippines. The other is English. There are some ~800 distinct language variants through out the ~1900 inhabited islands.

The rugged terrain separates many tribes, plus, there are the Negritos, Phillipine peoples of the forests, and also, many people around Manilla, Luzon, still speak Spanish, reflecting the occupation of Luzon, for 400 years.

The cultures are rich in tradition and various religions, from animism, Catholicism, Christianity, and Islam. There are still said to be remants of head-hunting traditions in the Northern jungles of Bagio, on Luzon. Yes, the belief systems continued to influence language.

Tagalog is mostly if not widely spoken in the Philippines. It is the other medium of instruction in schools aside from English. However, I'd like to point out that Tagalog is one of the many languages and dialects in the country which is the mother tongue of those who reside particulary in the National Capital Region (Manila and the nearby provinces)
