1. Buy CD/DVD that teach you interactive Tagalog.
2. Ask your dad to teach you two words of Tagalog a day and at the end of the week use each word in a sentence.
3. Find online forums where the language is Tagalog and communicate there.
4. Make cue cards with words you have learned and quiz yourself with them.
5. Watch tv shows in Tagalog and use your remote control to use English subtitles.
6. Become pen pals with someone in the Philipines. Since most Filipinos speak English as well as Tagalog, you will pick up a lot of new words and phrases.
7. If you can afford to, hire a tutor. You’ll be surprised by how effective this method is.
If you can, I recommend that you do all of these since the more you use it the better you get.
Just go to the philipines… or find someone who speaks it and make friends with them. Just make it clear what the purpose of your friendship is – maybe they want to learn English and it’s a good trade? You can do this online on some types of student sites for this purpose – they have real time chat ways to do this with video these days too! Just study up a little ahead of time by getting a video or tape with books from your local library first. And then surprise your dad with your new attempts to communicate. It might help if you knew Spanish b/c a lot of words are "cognates" – or words that sound and look like the word in Tagalog b/c they were taught Spanish in school for a long long time and it became part of their language and even culture. Horse= caballo in both languages (spelling might be different) Buena suerte!
you can join any Filipino organizations near your place
How old are you now?
If you are still at an school age, try studying in a local school in the Philippines and you will get a lot of the language from your school mate within a fraction of time than by studying through tapes or cds.
watch TFC or PinoyTV…
i’d probably say go to Philippines for at least a month and listen carefully to the conversations
I would be glad to teach you if you want to.
just mail me….
But I just have to inform you that I will be out next week so maybe we can start by June.
the easiest i could think of is online chat/conference. visit some filipino shops in your area and have some short tagalog conversations.
But if you have the time and the means, the best way would be to take a vacation here and buy some grade school filipino books, watch local tv shows, make friends etc.
