What is the best way to learn tagalog?
My wife is a filipina and I would like to learn tagalog. Rosetta Stone is too expensive. Does anybody know of any other learning programs that are cheaper and still good?

Well RS might be too expensive but the good news is that it wouldn’t be very helpful for you if you are starting to learn Tagalog. There’s one simple reason, it does not deliver what people would expect. I’m not putting down their method because it has its place somewhere in your language learning journey but it certainly doesn’t have a place as a beginner’s tool. There are several much better options for a beginner method. The reason is that Rosetta uses a flashcard based method and like other flashcard based methods (digital or not) it helps you expand your vocabulary base. That’s what flashcard based learning tools are designed to do. But if you don’t already have a working knowledge of the language, Rosetta Stone will just help you memorize random words but it will never help you build the foundation of the language that is crucial to any meaningful learning. Knowing all the words in the dictionary, doesn’t mean you can SPEAK the language. I think if you want to be able to communicate effectively you now need to focus on conversational skills (understanding natives and responding) and acquire the basics of the language. I think the best course do achieve that goal, is the Pimsleur method. It’s an audio only method that focuses on conversational skills. You will learn to train your ear to understand natives (an essential part of early learning often overlooked by other methods), develop very good pronunciation and acquire the core structures and grammar of the language (exactly what RS fails to do.) I find that it does very well with new students as it is a real confidence builder. It’s really the best method to get you conversing immediately. I like the fact that you can do it on the go, in your car, commuting, on your iPod, etc. You’ll find the best prices on amazon (it’s about half the price of RS.) Once you are done with Pimsleur, speaking with a native is really the best option and that seems like a perfect scenario in your situation. Good luck.
