What is the best language course to learn tagalog?
Trying to learn tagalog or bisaya. Are there any good language courses out there? I have tried one that was pretty expensive, but turned out to be mostly worthless. Also need something that includes CDs so I will learn to pronounce correctly. The one I have includes CDs, but the people talking are not speaking it correctly, (as I found when I went there). The best way to learn any language is to live in that country for a while and learn it from the people that speak it. Second best way is is to get a friend that is fluent in the language you want to learn.
Rosetta stone is the best, but you have to special order it. I got agood one at a computer show, but when I got here I found out the dialect was totally different. The one Rosetta stone has is good http://www2.rosettastone.com/en/individuals/languages/tagalog for the link.
Hey there. I am a Filipina and I speak both Tagalog and Bisaya.
I agree with jackdinah.. In order for you to learn a language, you have to live in that country. This is especially true for Tagalog and Bisaya, because it’s not widely spoken, like French or Spanish or even Chinese. Only Filipinos speak Tagalog or Bisaya… Tagalogs even find it hard to learn Bisaya. That should give you some idea on how hard it is to learn the language.
I have a Filipino-American friend who came here. He was trying to learn Bisaya. He lived in Cebu City for almost 6 months. He was able to understand most Bisaya words, but he was never able to speak it. Now he’s living in Manila (for almost 6 months) and understand only the most basic Tagalog words.
So, the point is, you really have to practice the language. You either have to live here, or get a friend to teach you the language… YOu have to hear it and speak it.. Do you have a girlfriend/boyfriend here? She/he should be able to help you… or you can do voice on yahoo IM and talk with Filipinos.. or find Filipino friends there who’d be happy to help you.

By the way, Bisaya is the collective term for the dialects spoken in the Visayas and Mindanao areas. If you go to Cebu, for example, the dialect is Cebuano. If you go to Surigao, it’s Surigaonon… So if you hear people say Cebuano, it also means Bisaya… one more thing, the correct spelling term for the dialect is Visayan, but most people just say bisaya..

i’m filipino and when i was young, i used to be able to speak both those languages. but now, since i’ve left the phil, i can only understand bisaya, not speak it, and can speak tagalog but with an english accent. so i guess being around people who speak the language helps. just don’t mix up the bisaya accent with tagalog coz it’ll sound funny! good luck!
i agree with everyone here. you can find lots of online dictionaries and even some books on the language but the best way to really learn is to surround yourself with people who speak the language fluently. if you can’t come to manila, perhaps you can search for some filipinos who live near your area. good luck!
