socialize with Filipinos and talk to them in Filipino.
Try watching tagalog films everyday and minggle with the locals.
make friends with Tagalog speakers…
Learning a language is not so easy. It takes hard work, focus, concentration and love.
I believe you can do that. Informal Tagalog has derived words from Spanish. All the words are in this wikipedia article right here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Tagalog_loanwords
memorize that. If you know Spanish.
try to have filipino friends
watch tagalog videos on youtube
watch tagalog news, movies, etc
The best way to learn is to find someone (Filipino) to practice with. There’s no better way to learn than to immerse yourself in the language with native speakers.
You’ll want some good reference material as well. There’s a great online dictionary and other Tagalog reference tools that you can find here:
http://www.seasite.niu.edu/Tagalog/Tagalog_mainpage.htm
Look in the "Tagalog Tools" section to find the dictionaries. Also, you’ll find a good book to start with in "Basic Tagalog" which actually appears to be available online on Google Books:
http://books.google.com/books?id=C84jnF1okoMC&printsec=frontcover
Lastly, I’d highly recommend watching Filipino television programs. You’ll be able to hear a lot of Tagalog spoken by native speakers in natural conversations – something that you won’t get by reading alone. You might see if you can subscribe to The Filipino Channel (TFC) via cable or satellite TV. If it isn’t available to you then you can get pretty much all the shows shown on TFC and more on ABS-CBN’s website for a small monthly fee – http://now.abs-cbn.com They also feature a limited amount of free content.
I’d recommend the show Wowowee as a good learning tool. It’s a game show which, while sometimes corny, has the benefit of listening to people speak conversational Tagalog. It also can be challenging because some of the hosts there speak very fast. If you watch some of the Drama shows then the Tagalog they speak is much "deeper" and harder to understand than what people use in ordinary, day-to-day conversations.
Good Luck!
what is your name? anong pangalan mo?
how old are you? ilan taon ka na?
good morning! magandang umaga!
etc. atbp.
I hope you can remember some of this easy tagalog phrase…its free..no charge!
First buy yourself a English to/from Tagalog dictionary.
Rent and watch Filipino movies.
Buy and listen to Filipino songs.
Interact with a Filipino who can help translate words for you.
Visit various chat sites and observe how Filipino interact. When you become comfortable, try communicating by typing and expressing yourself in Tagalog.
When you’ve gotten the hang of chatting, try verbally expressing yourself in Tagalog with Filipinos who understand Tagalog.
Good luck!
