Hello everyone. For the past few months, I've been studying "Tagalog" which is the language of the Philippines in case you didn't know. I recently picked up "Pimsleur's Tagalog" and I'm progressing along fine. I didn't want this to be my ONLY method for learning, so I looked up some other methods.

I've read everywhere (including here on Yahoo! Answers) that conversing with your family/friends in Tagalog will help you pick up the language fast. Now, I find this hard because I don't even know what to say! My vocabulary isn't that broad and whenever they speak, I can only pick out key words and sometimes I can't even pick up any words.

Any suggestions? Should I finish my studies and get proficient before I start practicing? This is my first time actually committing to learning a language so any tips would help.

I've searched yahoo answers about rosetta stone and a lot of people say that the best way to learn Tagalog or any foreign language is by actually visiting said country and conversing with them. I've lived in the Philippines for almost 3 years (2 years of high school there and 2 semesters of college) but unfortunately, I was never able to speak Tagalog nor the language spoken most at the province I stayed at,which is Ilocano. I barely know the basics. I might be going there again sometime next year or 2013 for a few years and I really want to learn Tagalog or Ilocano by then. Is Rosetta Stone a good way to go? Or what other options are there? I've seen the prices for Rosetta Stone and they are pretty expensive. Can someone suggest others that I could possibly look in to?

Well, I've been in America for about 4 years now and I'm afraid I'm losing my ability to speak both ilocano and tagalog. I try to speak it at home but then I forget to. D= I'd like to email with someone (I do have AIM but I always forget to go on even though I have to) and keep up with my language. Tagalog used to be my first language and ilocano (which I don't remember how I learned it) my second. Now English moved up to first. O.o
So if someone does speak ilocano or tagalog I would be more than happy to talk to you.

I am 19 years old and a high school graduate.I really want to learn Tagalog or Ilocano because all of my friends speak that language because they are all in the Philippines (I have been back in California since April 2009,also I haven't continued college yet because of complications with my transcripts so I do not go to school and I barely go out). I lived in the Philippines since May or June 2006 til I came back on April 2009. I went to high school there for 2 years and took 2 semesters of college. I've read while searching on yahoo answers that it is easy to learn Tagalog if you lived there for more than a year or so but I never learned it at all. I don't even understand the majority of what they say on TFC or when my relatives talk in Tagalog, same with Ilocano. For a few days now, I've been trying to teach myself using an online course that comes with an online book and tapes that I can listen to. Right now I am still on the basics because I keep repeating the same thing because even the basics I don't seem to be able to remember. What other methods can I use?

just paste it on your answer or you could send it to kiranobunaga@yahoo.com thanks a lot

I am very interested in learning Tagalog. Mainly to become closer with my family there in the Philippines. Also, to experience the culture by first hand going to markets to buy my own food, catching a tricycle & paying the fee myself, ect. I cannot do all this now, I do not speak Tagalog jaja.

But if there are any foreigners who have learned the language fluently, can you please share your experiences with me & yahoo answers.

First off, what drew your interest to pursue fluency in the Filipino National Language?
How did you actually learn the language itself, through a dictionary, online program?
How long did it take you to learn learn, & speak the language clearly and concisely?
Was it difficult? Is Tagalog a hard language to learn?

How has it changed your relationships with the Filipino people?
& your overall experience in The Philippines?

Your feedback is appreciated lots!

I have an LG C2000 (about a year and a half old), and i get three languages (english, french, and spanish). I am learning another language (tagalog) and want to chat on my cell phone, using yahoo chat, with the "t9 fill word function" in that language.

I have spoken to both the phone manufacterer (LG, of course) and my service provider (AT&T) and neither can help with any additional software. In the next couple of months i will be upgrading my phone, but i would like to practice in chat with this other language before that.

Does anybody have some helpful advice of where to to try to find my solution? (The best answer will likely be in enlightening me on a source for a download to my phone that will add the t9 language of tagalog, and until now is likely to be the only answer, but i am open).
To be a bit more precise in my explanation... I intended to say i already will be upgrading to ANOTHER phone. I am looking to solve it until i do so.
Rosetta Stone is actually already the way i am learning Tagalog. I happen to have a tagalog friend in yahoo chat and just want to add my communication with her as an additional way for practice. But thanks levitate15, for the extra confirmation on language learning selections...

This is actually a spin-off from Coqui's question. He did raise some very interesting points and it's a topic deserving of our thoughts and opinions.

We all know that Filipino (our national language) is largely based on Tagalog, the prevalent language/dialect in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces. But we do have other dialects that are widely spoken by large numbers of people, like Cebuano and Ilocano.

So why Tagalog? Does it mean it is better than the others? Thank you for your answers.

Mabuhay!, Maayong adlaw kaninyo mga igsoon ko! I lived in the Philippines particularly in Davao. I'm a Filipino and I just want to know who are Filipinos in the Yahoo!Answer. And I also want to learn other languages. Can you teach me?

I really want to learn some basic words in Tagalog...I believe that is the main language spoke in Philippines..if not please correct me. Would anyone be willing to email/chat with me to give me some basic words in that language as well as what they are in english so I could learn them? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)
example: how do you say:
how are you? hello? goodbye? have a nice day? just simple everyday things like that.
the reason I am interested in learning some is that my brother in law and father in law both married ladies from the Philippines (Cebu) and I would like to surprise them by learning some basics to greet them in their language. I thought it would be a nice gesture for them from me :)
thank you Michaella! my email is perfectsweetbeauty@yahoo.com if you want it....I wanted to do something for them, mainly my new mother in law because she will be here a year in March so this was her first Christmas away from her family and she was a little sad so I thought if I could say hello to her and things like that in her language it would make her feel better...oh and my sis in law will be here 2 years in April

I'm going to the philippines next year in Dec. I need to become fluent in tagalog by that time. Napaprakits ako na sa chat nalang. Ano pa ang gagawin ako? I want to write and speak tagalog as fluent as I can. Na bibili akong software, rosetta stone. atska bibli kong dictionario. parang bata ako na sulat en tagalog, and to speak it. but im trying to practice. my grammar is not correct, but i want to do it right. Nanood ako TFC para maintindihan ko, lahat. What else. give me ideas!
If anyone wants to help me, I need all the help I can get. Naturo ko.

flipside4real2006@yahoo.com

i know there are lots of filipino english speakers. help me to become fluent.
also, you can send me a YM at
flipside4real2006, so we can chat in tagalog or something, for practice

tell me what you think.
I'm gonna try answering back, people, let's make this into some kind of debate for fun.

@Flower Power, but there are no full Filipino language anymore. The Filipino language is a mixture of different languages: Spanish, vernacular languages, and English.
I'm also giving you guys permission to debunk the arguments of those before you... that is, if it is allowed in Yahoo Answers. LOL.
