In the second chapter, there is a poem by Isagani which was recited by Basilio. It was about the steam engine. I couldn't find it in my book.

I have made a card for a friend whose brother was killed in the recent floods in the Philippines. I want to write, in her native Tagalog, that I am sorry for her loss, or that I will pray for her, a proverb, a poem, or whatever is the custom when you lose someone. She is older than I, but we have become close friends over the last few months, so I'm not sure if that changes the tone. Obviously I will tell her all this in English, but I thought it might be a nice gesture to put on the card. She is so very homesick and saddened right now. If you speak Tagalog natively, I would appreciate your help. Thanks.

He was born in Sta. Cruz, Manila to Dr. Vicente de Jesus and Susana Pangilinan. Pepito, as he was called, studied at the Liceo de Manila where he got the Bachiller en Artes degree. From the Academia de leyes, he obtained the Bachiller en Leyes degree, but he did not take the bar examination because he was already preoccupied with writing.

His literary inclination was manifested early in life. His first poem, Pangungulila, was written when he was 17 years old. In 1920, he worked for Taliba and began his famous column, Buhay Maynila. He caught the imagination of the readers through his appealing and incisive satire.

Most of his popularity rested on lyrical jousts he had with Florentino Collantes. This literary genre was practically unknown until popularized by Jose. The first of these encounters was Paru-paro’t Bubuyog held at the Instituto de Mujeres.

I was curious about this because during Dr. Rizal era he is using Spanish languages especially in his writtings like his ultimo adios and the two books, Noli and Fili. And if Tagalog was use during this time how come there are no known Tagalog piece or poem or any form of writing that was in Tagalog. I suppose everybody is speaking in Spanish and not Tagalog. I bet even Bonifacio is fluent in Spanish. Because he was once called a MISTISO. A mixture of Spanish and Filipino feature. The only thing I pity is why didn't we adopted 2 foreign languages, good in Spanish and also good in English at the same time fluent in Tagalog. We have all the advantages especially visiting Latin American countries like Ecuador, San Salvador, Chile, Peru, Brazil, Guatemala, and Europe like Spain, Portugal etc....can you provide a website that talks about Tagalog emerging language in the Philippines during the 17th century? I guess there are no person or persons dig further on the Tagalog subjects during these era. Is Rizal more concern of making Spanish the national language of the Philippines? What do you think?

I'm writing a song based on my interpretation of the heroe's last poem. The music is in place, as well as my own interpretation of each of the 14 passages of the pentameter, though I patterned after Bonifacio's 4 by 12 syllables. But I am confounded by the best way to say it in Pilipino.

I have studied the works of Gatmaitan, Joaquin, etc. but I just can't find the phrase with "perfect certainty".

Can you please try to help me out on this?

Sa dilang lungkot ko'y kalungkot-lungkutan

Or

Sa madlang hapis ko, aking kalungkutan

It must end in "an".

On June 5, 1898, Aguinaldo issued a decree setting aside June 12 as the day for the proclamation of Philippine independence. At the same time, he commissioned Julian Felipe, a composer from Cavite, to prepare a composition which would be played during the independence ceremonies. On June 11, Felipe showed Aguinaldo the draft of his musical composition, which was entitled Marcha Filipina Magdalo. Aguinaldo and the other revolutionary leaders, upon hearing the composition played on the piano, adopted it as the official march of the Philippines. Aguinaldo then requested Felipe to teach the music to the members of the band of San Francisco de Malabon so it could be played the next day. Felipe changed the title of the march to Marcha Nacional Filipina(Philippine National March).

The following day(June 12, 1898), the music band of San Francisco de Malabon played it for the first time during the unfurling of the Filipino flag at Kawit. The beautiful melody of the anthem stirred the people's patriotic fervor.

For more than a year, the anthem remained without words. Towards the end of August 1899, a young poet-soldier named Jose Palma(younger brother of Dr. Rafael Palma) wrote the poem entitled Filipinas. This poem expressed in elegant Spanish verses the ardent patriotism and fighting spirit of the Filipino people. It became the words of the anthem. At last the national anthem was complete -- with music and words.

I write a lot of poetry in English and would really like to write something poetic & romantic in Tagalog for my girlfriend in PH. I've been trying to do it using translators online however I'm certain the intended message is lost or obscured in translation. I know this is something she would really appreciate so I'm determined to achieve it for her.

I'm hoping someone may be able to point me in the right direction. My poetic message must be in my own words from my own heart because my feelings for her are real ...so I have no desire to send her something someone else has written. I'm sure everyone would understand why that is so important.
