I've heard my aunts and uncles and my parents talk about this all the time. They say, "Wala siyang delicadesa." What does it mean? i looked up the Spanish meaning, and they say delicadesa is a delicacy. So what is delicadesa for Filipinos? Thanks.
sorry. i misspelled delicadeza.

THE REAL WORLD is where i want to learn

I guess the best place would be to start at the beginning. My wife and I met while I was stationed overseas. She lived in the Philippines while I was still in Japan. We got pregnant after marriage and she wanted to have her family with her when she gave birth so the baby was born in the Philippines. She was living with her family in one place as typical for filipinos so the baby had constant attention, especially from her mom. Due to some difficulties with immigration and missing paperwork, it wasnt until this year that we were able to bring the child home with us. He is now 4. I was able to visit quite a few times while he was in the Philippines. My wife's immigration was already completed so she had been working here in the US with me to save money to send home for her family. In any event, our son understood he needed to come home with his parents so we brought him back here and hes now been here with us for 3 days. It was a big change for me especially since Ive not had any time with him really so Im learning to be a dad for the first time. The other issue is that he speaks mostly Tagalog which is native language over there. He speaks a little English but I worry about what will happen when preschool times comes, which is right around the corner. Ive never trained anyone to speak, Im not sure if flash cards will work or how Im supposed to go about this? I dont want him falling behind because hes not a native English speaker. So far hes been pretty good. He plays and Ive had a day or two where mommy can sleep and Ill take him to the park with me. He doesnt ask for her and as long as I keep him entertained, seems fine. Oh yeah, with this all in mind, I shouldnt be expecting much sleep during these years correct? I just want to be sure I know what to expect. Seems like hes super active really late into the night. People have told me I should sleep as much as I can when he sleeps. Seems like hell wake up for 8 hours, take a nap and then up for another 8 hours. Its been hard cuz my wife and I are kind of on different schedules that way. She stays up with him at night for the last 4 hours or so because she can get him to sleep by coddling him. Doesnt do that with me so I usually crash a few hours before her. Then when he wakes up, Ill send her to the bedroom so that she can sleep and I try and take him out of the house somewhere to play so he can use up some energy. Its tough in WA, the weather is always so bad its hard to find places outside to take him...ideas? I guess Im just wondering if this is all normal, if the sleep thing will be something the wife and I will have to make the best of while hes this age and also if anyone is filipino reading this, if you have any suggestions for teaching him English now that hes here? He likes watching backyardigans on tv and whatnot, and knows some songs totally in English but still talks to my wife and I in Tagalog. Again, Im just worried about school and him learning a new language and how best to teach him. If anybody lives in WA area and knows of any resources I could consult about Filipino schools that teach English or something similar, that would be great. I just want the best for him and to get a good dad. As good a dad as my wife is a mother. I feel like shes having to hold up so much right now and I just want to do everthing I can to make this doable for her too. Hope I didnt write too much. I appreciate any inputs or advice, this is scary starting off. Thanks

I am half Filipino and half Puerto Rican and was raised in the US. Both my parents speak Spanish fluently and I understand it. I however, don't speak Spanish I don't have much of an accent when I speak. Whenever someone that speaks Spanish finds out that I don't speak Spanish fluently they look disgusted. Like now I'm not Puerto Rican enough. Anyone have the same experience?

im 23 years old, 25% chinese, i only know a little fukien and mandarin, i learned it by book and listening. however i want to be more fluent and able to understand chinese better. i wasnt introduced to chinese by my parents, i live in the philippines and i was raised the filipino way...is it too late for me to learn such languages?

My parents use some Tagalog around the house ( Ba: Half Chinese half Filipino, Mom: full Filipino ) and i can decode it and get the gist of what they are saying but i cant say it myself. when i say it, it sounds odd and i cant get the pronunciations right. i recently started learning basic chinese on my own and i can pronounce and say the words right, should i do Chinese first ? i dont know, because i feel that i SHOULD know Tagalog because im 3/4 but, Chinese is not only easier for me, its more interesting too.

If so, I was hoping you could translate a phrase for me. I'm getting married to my girlfriend who is half Filipina and her parents want me to "formally" ask them if I can marry their daughter, so I thought it would be cool to ask them in Tagalog. Anybody know how to say something like, "With your blessing, I would be honored to have your daughter’s hand in marriage” or something to that extent? Can you write it in English phonics so I can pronounce it?

Thanks!

Could someone teach me the basics of tagalog or a website that i can learn it easily for free? I'm a filipina born in the united states so the only language i know is english and a little bit of Japanese....My parents were born in the philipines and speak tagalog and another language from there.
They speak tagalog often when they're talking to eachother and they speak fluent english, so i understand a little bit of what they're saying. I want to actually learn the basics of the language so i may understand and "surprise" them by speaking some tagalog myself.
I live in washington state so basicly the only language i need to speak is english, but this is a self interest thing...
I want something easy to understand and learn for a preteen (i'm 12)...
I'm focusing more on learning Japanese though..//_-'
Thanks!

Tagaglog has always been the language spoken in my home, and my parents have/still always speak to me in tagalog. But over the years i've stopped speaking and started answering in english.

I have found that speaking tagalog is really difficult for me now. I understand it all. But speaking is so hard. It's hard for me to put sentences together. I'm self-concious when i try to speak because i have a horrible accent and know my grammer is all wrong.

I want to be able to speak tagalog again. To my family back in the philippines, and all my friends there. Now to my question...
I'm thinking about buying one of those Learn Tagalog programs i can get from the book store. I just want to know if it's worth it. If it will help me at all. I mean i understand tagalog. I can put basic sentences together... just not elaborate much. Will this program help me? Or do these programs just teach me the stuff i already know?
please no answers about just get your family to speak to you in tagalog. BECAUSE THEY DO. they have all my life. i'm around them 24/7. they speak tagalog to me 24/7. i just can't speak. i also now choose not to speak in front of them because it's embarassing how horrible my tagalog and my accent is.

I have a cousin who grew up in the philippines till he was 9 years old. He went to school there, had friends and learned the filipino language very fluently. When he was 9 years old, he went back to germany with his parents. He's now 17 years old and he says he forgot the language! when he visited the philippines again, he didn't speak a word of the phil language coz he says he forgot it! He was a very fluently speaker when he was a kid, how can he forget? Did he actually forget the language or is he just lying and pretending he forgot it?

Is there a good free online computer translator to translate from English to Tagalog, and from Tagalog to English? I have two very good college friends who speak English but their parents' English is a little shaky, and I wanted to email the parents (whom I have had many interactions with) short notes in Tagalog so they could better understand. Thanks!

My parents speak it but i just want to know a web site that can translate from english to Philippine language. I already know Alta Vista Bable fish DOESN'T have this.

can someone please tell me some basic words, please no cuss words. ;)

I am hispanic, my parents are from mexico and salvador. I think Philipinos are awesome, I have a whole bunch of friends that are Philipinos but they never speak Tagalog around me, idk why. So I want to surprise them, please tell me some nice words, i dont want to offend none of them, i love them very much, so please no cuss words.

mayroong ko TFC, TFC subscriber ako ehh. Anyways, I don't always understand all the tagalog words, naintindihan ko maraming magsalita, pero, I cannot catch all of it. I always watch this one telenovela with anne curtis and Sam Milby, Natatawa ako si Sam ksi he is an english speaker and when he speaks in tagalog, it sort of reminds me of myself. It doesn't right, but I think I can speak it without having that american accent, napapraktis ako so hindi naman marinig akong accent. I wish TFC had english captions, cuz that would help tremendously. Nanood ako ng GMA na rin. HAY SUS Mariosep, mahirap naman magintindihan, ang balis naman nakausap. Its hard to catch everything. anyways, does it help if i watch the show and then keep asking for the translation of the words? I sound desparate, cuz i am, i need help talaga. Natatakot ko, when I return back to pinas, I cant speak tagalog yet. wawa naman ako. I want to speak tagalog talaga. and understand everything. I need to bond with my relatives
To let you guys know, im 23, and I dont live with my parents, so please dont tell me to practice with my parents.
no, my parents spoke to me in inglish and tagalog, I think most of the time it was english?? EWAN, basta, somehow I didn't pick it up. It's the same with my fil-am friends, they didn't pick up the language like me even though they were rasied in a traditional filipino home. But gusto ko magtuto.

I talk at a really fast pace, usually people have trouble understanding me, but people I am close to have become use to it, and understand me, it's kinda like someone with an accent, people who spend a lot of time with me, just learn to understand what I'm saying. Anyways, is there any reason as to why I talk so fast? My mother is Filipino, and i've noticed that all Filipinos when speaking in Tagalog talk extremely fast, could this be where I learnt to talk so fast? One of my friends is also half Filipino and she talks fast too. But yeah, I have become more aware of it though, and usually slow down when I'm talking.

To give you an indication of how fast I talk, watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6XLswqiX0s I can say the whole song easily, I actually have to slow down on the line about getting to Letterman, cause I say it too fast.

So yeeeeah, if you have any ideas as to why I talk so fast, let me know! :) )
sunil v - I've read a few things that say that, but I must honestly say that I think that's Bullshi*t! No offence to you for answering though! haha. But yeah, that's definitely not why I speak fast. I read something that said that it's cause they have low self worth and no self confidence, and I know that's not me. And I know that I was always listened to by my parents, it's just a weird habbit haha

One of my best friend's parents just had a stroke...she's feeling really bad about it, and I've consoled her a bit. I wanted to tell her mom some stuff too, but she only speaks tagalog. If anyone could translate this, I'd appreciate it.

/// I know how hard it is when one of your family members gets hurt. I really hope he gets better soon, and that it doesn't happen again.\\

And absolutely NO Google translate. That is BS right there, and it's not reliable.

Hi! I would like to learn tagalog. I am filipino, but ever since I was born, my parents spoke to me in english. I know that they should try to talk to me in tagalog,(they know that I want them to talk to me in tagalog so it could help me) but when they talk to me in tagalog, I get so confused! I've searched the web for 'lessons' and stuff, but seeing the translations in 'words' doesn't help much... Books don't help either. So I've seen the Rosetta Stone commercial like a bazillion times and I'm pretty interested in it. (From the commercial, it looks like it really helps...with the pictures and all...its pretty neat!) But its so expensive!!! >.< So could anyone recommend something similar to Rosetta Stone (much cheaper though) or any websites that helped you at all learn tagalog?

I understand that there is a legal requirement in the Philippines for Filipinos age 21-25 to have a written statement from the parents saying they understand that their child intends to marry. Is it proper etiquette for an American man who wishes to marry a 22-year-old Filipina to ask her father for his blessing to marry or does the daughter just let her parents know she will get married or what? I assume that the man should ask the father, but I want to be sure how it is done properly and with respect. What advice would you give to help this conversation be more positive and successful? By the way, the father is college educated and owns a successful business in their province and the family is religious. Just out of curiosity, what if the parents refuse to provide the above-mentioned written document? While of course it is not the best way, can the couple get a waiver for this requirement? Salamat po!
I am an American, but live in Asia not USA so I'm not going to get a fiance visa for her to USA. I will either marry her where I live if I can get her a tourist visa (she has a good job so it is possible but I know hard) or in Philippines if we cannot get her a visa to where I live. I have been to the Philippines about 20 times in the past 2 years. I have visited her in person many times, but just became more than friends since the end of May. By the way, I really want advice from Filipinos or others who have first hand experience with this. Thanks!

both my parents are full flip, yet ive never been to the philippines nor do i speak tagalog. now im desperate in learning cause its just embarassing

I am learning Tagalog for the my mother's side of the family who are all Filipino. I decided to talk to a chat bot (cleverbot) to help me learn some more conversational Tagalog. Some of the things I did not understand.

How do I say this in Tagalog:

Where is the _______?
I can't find it.
Where are we going?
Can we go to ______?

Please tell me how to say these formally and casually. Thank you!
**Also;; How do you say "Why?" formally?
One more thing: Do you talk formally when speaking to parents?

Hey Y-A. I'm 16-years old, 100% Filipino, and I've decided I wanted to learn Tagalog. Of course, my parents are both Filipino and they speak it fluently. It just bothers me how I have Filipino parents and yet I cannot speak Tagalog. I know it will be hard, but can you guys give me any tips on how to start?

I pretty much can understand the basic stuff they tell me, such as eat, shower, sleep, vocab, etc. However, when it comes to conversational Tagalog, I can only understand bits and pieces. I want to be able to understand Tagalog and speak it fluently.

What should I do to get started? It's really embarrassing to speak Tagalog with my American accent, because they laugh at me, but I'm willing to do it. How long would it take to become fluent if I were to study and practice it every day with my parents? Would it be recommended if I am learning Spanish in school?

Thanks in advanced.

I'm 15 years old and I still don't know how to talk in my native language. My parents are too lazy to go and teach me. So, is there another way for me to learn?

okay so when my parents and I went to phillippines they kept telling me that I should speak english because it makes me look and sound high class.I dont because I love speaking tagalog and im never gonna want to be too good or whatever.

For my English report, I have to talk about the Filipino American sub-culture. If anyone can provide links of info about them that would be great. Please, do not send me biographies of people. I need factual information about them in general.

Or if you know something about Filipino Americans already, lemme kno!

Stuff that would be good to know about them are:
How they grow up with the American lifestyle
Their balance in accent
How parents treat them
Their aim on their careers
Their behavior

You get the idea. Any info can be good! Thanks.

My parents speak tagalog all the time, and they've never taught me. I understand some of it, but I can't speak it.

I'm not sure exactly what specifically I might want to read but I do want to read accounts of filipino americans who discuss how it was difficult socially to grow up in america and perhaps why they like or didn't like their upbringing with traditional filipino parents among other family conflicts that happen being 1st generation americans of filipino descent.

I'm Filipino, and both of my parents are Filipino. Both of my parents can speak Tagalog fluently. How can I learn to be a Tagalog speaker too? Should I ask my parents to teach me? (But would they know how to teach me?)

Thanks.
