I'm a freshman in high school, fluent in English (I hope, lol) and sorta-kinda-on-my-way to being proficient in Spanish. I practice Spanish with my mom, who is from the Philippines and speaks Tagalog.
Anyway, I LOVE languages and would really like to start learning a second. French is such a pretty language, and it's spoken in a lot of Canada, in France and some smaller surrounding European countries, and throughout Africa. It ranks as pretty useful in most polls/lists/etc. However, it seems like everyone speaks Spanish or French, and having a really unique language under my belt seems like a good idea too, so I was thinking Tagalog (Filipino) since I could talk with my family and I have heritage ties there. However, it's only spoken in one country and even then not everyone in the Philippines speaks it, so it's usefulness is limited.
So, will knowing Spanish and French give me enough of an advantage in the world as far as college/future jobs, or are they too common as 2nd-languages in America? Will learning the obscure language of my heritage end up being useless? Should I aim for something middle-ground like German or Russian maybe? Opinions please!
After all Spanish is part of our heritage. It can be an option to learn for students in high school or college. We already have Spanish words in our language, we have a head start.
One of the advantages of Filipino workforce in international market is the command English language why not expand the resume and qualifications of our overseas workers, Spanish certainly is the second most sought after language, next to English.
I did not say change the official language to Spanish - I merely suggested adding Spanish.
Currently we have English and Filipino as official languages.
1) Another clarification - official language is not the same as national language.
2) Spanish is indeed the second most sought after language in international market, why what do you think is?
3) I presented Spanish as an option not a replacement.
Yeah yeah, other cultures and all that crap. But I wanna talk about the Philippine people, since I'm filipino, and I know little about other cultures.
Anyway, do we really need to be proud? Are we the master race? Do we really need to go "LIEK OMG OMG A FILIPINO DEVELOPED THE FLOURESCENT BULB LOLLOOLOL WE R D BEST!!". Do we really need filipino pride songs? What makes us better than other people? Don't we all have good qualities and flaws? Is it really a good idea to judge other cultures based on your culture?
It's in the travel section, so sue me. Go rave about how I'm turning back on my heritage. If being a filipino is being ethnocentric, then I'm not a filipino.
And don't worry, I'm not generalizing.
My great-grandfather was from Leyte and I'm interested in learning the language at some point. Unfortunately, he passed away when I was little, so I never got the opportunity to learn about my heritage from him.
I wanna use that saying for my tattoo and also some of my heritage in this tattoo.
And also not too long, i don't want to wait for ten years for my tattoo to be done. i'm exaggerating but i just don't want it that long
