I think that should be done. It would be nice if Filipinos knew three languages. Tagalog, English and Spanish.
Mabuti yan, diba?
Didn't they say that the president is going to make a compulsory subject at school?
Why is that we, Filipinos, are not using our very own language in every different situations, such senate hearings, public speeches, forums, seminars, Q&A in every prestigious pageants here in the Philippines. Also in written format such as our leading newspapers here in the Philippines, books, signs (warning signs, traffic signs, slogans, announcements and ads). What's the sense of all of these if the one who read and listen to these are Filipinos? I know that English is very well known and spoken languages in this era, but are we gonna let other people vanish our very own language?
I am very confused right now, this questions always keep popping out in my mind everyday. SOMEONE HELP ME?
(totoo po akong pilipino, nag-englis2san lang ako para hindi matanggal ang tanong ko)
I'm really wondering what was it.
I keep on wondering how about those Spanish words that mixed up with our language? For example the tagalog word "sabon" which originates from the spanish word "jabon". Did the filipinos call it "sabon" before the spanish people came?
I live in an area with a lot of Filipinos and most only date within their own group, other Asians and Whites. We have a lot of Puerto Ricans too but they date Blacks, other Hispanics and I have seen Lebanese and Middle Eastern guys with the girls too.
My friend keeps saying it is extremely common but I have rarely seen it, many Latinas I have talked to are not attracted to them.
I work in a Filipino owned company and there are alot of filipinos who work there. When were in the office or meeting they start talking in tagalog right in front of the others not remembering that the rest of us speak english.
I was looking for books about Philippine Presidents but can only find books about Marcos. What happened to other Presidents? I think Filipinos are focusing too much on Rizal, Bonifacio et al that most of us don't have any ideas of what a good President or what should a President be. How many books were written dedicated to Rizal? Compare that to Quezon, Roxas, Magsaysay and others?
it's my first time using Google Chrome and its language is in Filipino. My brother downloaded it and all (we're partly Filipinos btw ♥) but he doesn't know how to change the language. So yeah, how do i change it? We can understand Filipino pretty much but with everything that's written in Filipino--it drives us crazy! Thank you very much and God bless you! >:D<
Here in the Philippines, if you can't speak fluently, some will treat you as if you are unintelligent and inferior. This causes a lot of inferiority complex among Filipinos. Some are afraid to speak in English, some just resolves it by speaking Taglish (Tagalog English).
I just want to add that Speaking english in my country is like a status symbol. That is why some perceive others who tries to speak the english language as social climbers.
What did the Spaniards taught the filipinos and what words?
Well my Spanish teacher just wants to know.
I was surfing in the internet a while ago about weddings and I found this: lol
(This joke was found on the Internet and has circulated and been forwarded many times over via email. Foreigners planning to marry Filipinos should note that these are exaggerations, but they will somehow get the idea. It was written by an American man who loves his Filipina wife despite what follows.)

Some of it are funny and I think maybe the guy was just exaggerating but I also think it might be true.. who knows. (to each their own) lol
I just want to hear your opinions from you guys after reading the content of these pages.especially from those who are already married. Feel free to add something/ anything especially about weddings and marriage. Thanks.
Urm, curiousity hit and I was just wondering whether or not Filipinos really did have their own form of writing (which is now extinct).
I'm Filipino myself, and I found a chart on Google of symbols for Filipino. So was there, or was there not?
Why should filipinos learn spanish?
I talk at a really fast pace, usually people have trouble understanding me, but people I am close to have become use to it, and understand me, it's kinda like someone with an accent, people who spend a lot of time with me, just learn to understand what I'm saying. Anyways, is there any reason as to why I talk so fast? My mother is Filipino, and i've noticed that all Filipinos when speaking in Tagalog talk extremely fast, could this be where I learnt to talk so fast? One of my friends is also half Filipino and she talks fast too. But yeah, I have become more aware of it though, and usually slow down when I'm talking.
To give you an indication of how fast I talk, watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6XLswqiX0s I can say the whole song easily, I actually have to slow down on the line about getting to Letterman, cause I say it too fast.
So yeeeeah, if you have any ideas as to why I talk so fast, let me know!
)
sunil v - I've read a few things that say that, but I must honestly say that I think that's Bullshi*t! No offence to you for answering though! haha. But yeah, that's definitely not why I speak fast. I read something that said that it's cause they have low self worth and no self confidence, and I know that's not me. And I know that I was always listened to by my parents, it's just a weird habbit haha
How many languages do you speak?
If you are a Filipino how many different languages & Filipino dialects do you speak & what is your level of fluency for each one?
For Filipinos, what do you think is the advantages &/or disadvantages of speaking several languages & dialects?
Lastly, if you speak more than 3 languages/dialects, how did you learn them all?
from a filipino person. i always thought it was a very interesting country. very different from other asian countries. what is the difference between a filipino person who was born in the Philippines and a USA born filipino?
ive noticed that there is also alot of relationships between filipinos americans and mexican americans? my next door neighbor is one of them. some girl i work with is also engaged to a filipino, and
also i have a client who is mexican married to a filipino? do you think is it because they have the same cultural beliefs?
I'm Filipino and was born in the United States. I want to know what it is like to live in Singapore. Do I need to know how to speak the language? Are there many Filipinos there? Will the people there accept me being Filipino and an American?
Also, what do you like and dislike about Singapore?
I am into research on language teaching and learning. I want be of much help to students that's why I would like to identify the Filipinos' language learning problems (specifically in the English language).
Our country is rich with natural resources, many holds a degree in college and most of the populations are literate yet, we continue to vote for incompetent and corrupt politicians. Filipinos marched to show their discontentment yet it’s like a vicious cycle that we keep repeating the same mistake. What are your thoughts on these?
Why is Manuel Quezon elected/considered as the Father of National Language of the Filipinos ? Please answer. Thank you in advance.
Specifically, I'd like to know which states have the highest concentration of Tagalog speakers. It would also be interesting to know what percentage of those who speak Tagalog are also fluent in English. FYI: Tagalog is a language spoken in the Philippines and by many Filipinos in the US.
I like all races and I think that every guy of every race is so cute. God created everyone 2 have beauty. I talked to black guys white guys hispanic guys and 1 filipino guy but I really am attracted to them and want to talk 2 one again but I don't know where they are. I have filipinos in my family by marriage I go 2 a filipino church.
Pls. indicate all the importance of the english language for the Filipinos. . I need to pass this research tomorow.
I'm thinking Tagalog (aka "Pilipino") doesn't only factor in diminishing other languages in the Philippines (especially Kapampangan and Ilokano) but also promotes the cultural colonization of the Tagalog ethnic group based around Manila and surrounding provinces. Tagalog further promotes regionalism, an example being Cebu. The solution would be to change the country's national language into another language. Which is more appropriate:
Spanish:
Pro - Although most of our ancestors never spoke Spanish, it was declared as the colony's lingua franca around the 19th century. Mainstream Filipino languages have Spanish loanwords.
Con - It would be unfair for our country's many unconquered tribes and ethnic groups such as the Igorots and Mangyans.
Malay:
Pro - This had been the lingua franca of all Philippine ethnic groups before the Spaniards colonized the islands. All native languages in the Philippines (except Chavacano in Zamboanga and Cavite) are relatives of Malay, making this language easier to learn. Bahasa Indonesia as an example, which is based on Malay, successfully unified the country's different ethnic groups.
Con - People might think we are allowing subjugation from Indonesia and Malaysia.
Opinions, anyone?
I'm talking about a national lingua franca, a language for all Filipinos to speak to each other. English is only for global purposes.
I'm starting to think English is the most appropriate national language. Non-western countries with diverse ethnic populations like Nigeria and Singapore have English as their national language.
As much as it is your opinion, it is pathetic to think English should be the country's national language because most, if not all, people will leave the Philippines for Anglo-countries like the USA and the UK.
But I still think Tagalog should be banned. It should be limited to original Tagalog-speaking provinces.
Whenever Filipinos speak in english in normal street conversation, they always say that they are nosebleeding.
Maybe its because they are running out of english words to say...
)
hmm, i just want to ask if you have any idea of where it came from?
What is the Primary language Filipinos speak. I'm half filipino, & I'd like to learn the language. Is it Tagalog? or is there a different one?
for us filipinos, is it right to say that the native language is tagalog if born in manila while the national language is pilipino?
Which any of these do you think - Chinese or Korean or Japanese language will help the Filipinos in the future.
I'm half white half filipino and i don't speak tagalog how come half white half filipinos don't speak tagalog Vanessa Hudgens is half white half filipina and she doesn't speak the language how come she only speaks english is it normal for half white half filipinos to not speak the language.note i'm talking half white half filipinos in the US.
I understand that there is a legal requirement in the Philippines for Filipinos age 21-25 to have a written statement from the parents saying they understand that their child intends to marry. Is it proper etiquette for an American man who wishes to marry a 22-year-old Filipina to ask her father for his blessing to marry or does the daughter just let her parents know she will get married or what? I assume that the man should ask the father, but I want to be sure how it is done properly and with respect. What advice would you give to help this conversation be more positive and successful? By the way, the father is college educated and owns a successful business in their province and the family is religious. Just out of curiosity, what if the parents refuse to provide the above-mentioned written document? While of course it is not the best way, can the couple get a waiver for this requirement? Salamat po!
I am an American, but live in Asia not USA so I'm not going to get a fiance visa for her to USA. I will either marry her where I live if I can get her a tourist visa (she has a good job so it is possible but I know hard) or in Philippines if we cannot get her a visa to where I live. I have been to the Philippines about 20 times in the past 2 years. I have visited her in person many times, but just became more than friends since the end of May. By the way, I really want advice from Filipinos or others who have first hand experience with this. Thanks!
I am an American and have always been wondering why...
Personally, in my opinion I find it even more annoying when Filipinos try to speak full out English. I went to this mall once with my cousins and everytime I spoke back to them in Tagalog they spoke back to me in English... but the whole thing was just completely wrong... some of the grammar was off and i dont know... it just sounded like they were trying TOO hard, like forced, it just seemed very unnatural and made me want to leave.
I don't mind them speaking taglish because atleast they are incorporating some of their natural language into the speech but someone told me that its worse to speak in Taglish so I'm confused. Help!
Also my cousins are NOT rich. They didn't go to an international school and they also went to a bad college. They live in a countryside where pretty much everyone speaks tagalog. They JUST moved to Cebu City tho, like 4 months ago?
I can speak tagalog!!
I may have spelled it wrong... sounds like "ah nu bah". I work with a lot of Filipinos, and I'm too embarrassed to ask, but that's one of the phrases I hear a LOT, especially among the girls when someone's teasing them.
And is there a good source for looking up phrases, pronunciation, and grammar? Thanks in advance.
I was cruising the comments on Youtube when I saw this very interesting comment by a user named "chopped_guy". He claims that Filipinos are misusing the word "artista", which obviously translates into "artist", to anyone who grabs a microphone or gets his/her face shown on television. Chopped_guy said further asks that...
"You wouldn't necessarily call a man who holds a paintbrush for the first time as an artist, so why should we call a basketball player, politician or an offspring of anyone famous who gets a role in a movie artista? Where's the art?
The word has completely lost it's meaning to the point that it's almost applicable to anyone who gets airtime. When everybody is an artista, nobody is."
Any thoughts on this?
I always see Filipinos include the word "hindi" a lot when they write sentences. What does the tagalog word "Hindi" mean in English?
(I know Hindi is the language Indians use, but that's not what I'm referring to here).
The Tagalog speaking Filipinos from Manila or around Manila.
Pertaining to Filipinos or Fil-Am here at YA who kept on asking translation of words or things in Filipino to English and vice versa. Here are some of them:

Have you ever found a Chinese trying to learn Mandarin or Fookien language? Even if so they are in the US or any where in the world for that matter. All Chinese knows their language esp. their own culture and tradition. In every Chinese movies I had seen they portrait that every Chinese from the time they were small and to the time of their adulthood must realize that they are Chinese esp. this Chinese character letter writing, it is in the stroke of the fingers that made every letters astonishing. If I am a Chinese I would be more proud being Chinese than Filipino. Don't you think? The Chinese are the first OFW for me that is, because they are the very first Asian who made it to California and work for the rail way station in the US in 18th century. Do you think meron ng Pinoy nun 18th century working for the US rail station? There is a program in TFC that is "Filipino ka, sabihin mo" portion that teaches Filipino overseas who doesn't speak Tagalog words, and they call it PILIPINO TIME. Like shy is torpe, cloud is ulap so on and so forth. Parang natuturo sa mga elementary pupils for Filipino class. Do we have to be like this? I mean let us assume one is born and raise in the US bakit hindi sya marunong kahit katiting na Pilipino language, isn't this odd. One of the parents is a pinoy so what is the problem there? If both parents are German I guess Pilipino language is out of the question or mayayabang lang talaga ang pinoy sa US at laging spokening in dollars ang gusto at pag nag Tagalog they want everybody to listen to their pronounciation. What a crap. Kaya nga tanong ko uli, meron ka na bang nakita or nakilalang Chinese who cannot speak Mandarin or Fookien? Ako wala kayo kaya meron?
