I would like to say in advance I am not trying to start anything unproductive, I’m just curious in people’s opinions on this subject.

Today, I was thinking about how many Americans tend to call themselves Americans with something at the beginning that connects somewhere else. Irish American, Italian American, African American, Chinese American, Korean American, etc. and I couldn’t help to think why. Though this is a belief I’ve always had, I thought I bring on here to try to find other people’s opinions so I can at least try to understand why they do so.

My opinion on this matter is somewhat simple. First things first, nationality squashes all. So before your this and that, your an American, or British, or a Canadian, or French. Second, connect with people who have similar beliefs, morals, ethics, interest, faith, residency, nationalities and other things on that line to you and not by, my father’s father, father father came from this country, so that makes me __________.

But when it comes to this matter, I defiantly don’t see the need for some things that some people do. So as the concept of connecting with you culture and heritage, as if those two were the same thing. Seeing how you’re born into a culture and not with one. So the same way an “Italian” American can “relate” with Italian culture, a Pilipino man who has no background to Italy can be born into that culture and pick up the culture. Pick up the Italian language, eat and become accustomed to Italian food, attend Catholic churches, and the many other parts of Italian culture. I, as an American who is Black, feel no connection to any other country then the United States, and countries I’ve visited and stayed for a decent amount of time. I feel no connections to any African nations, since I was not born there and have not direct family there, Parents, Cousins, Uncles Grandparents, Etc.

Now that does not mean that I am not for connection by personality and Characteristics. I, as an American, feel a connection to people such as Martin Luther King and Frederick Douglass, but I also feel those same connections to people like Thomas Edison and Abraham Lincoln. Why? Because as I call myself an American, they were as well. But not only because of the fact I was birthed into this country and raised in this society, but because I love this country. As a Deist, I connect with people such Thomas Paine and Lord Herbert of Cherbury. Why? Because since they were Deist, any in many ways and forms made Deism more well known, I can connect with them. As a Social Democrat I can connect with people such as Eduard Bernstein and even George Orwell. Why again? Because they were supporters who helped bring political change that I consider to be most important in my political views. Now, none of this is drawn from, what I said earlier, my father’s father father or my mother’s mother mother is from __________________.

Like I said, I’m curious to hear people’s opinion on this matter. I did spend some time typing this up so I would appreciate it if people don’t answer with trolling type answers just to get the points.

I am from California and I have lived here all of my life. I am full filipino but i have a difficult time speaking tagalog. I just came back from the philippines about a week ago and people that i've never met could tell that I was not from there even before i spoke a word. I did not dress too differently from my cousins who do live there. Does anyone know how they could tell? is it my mannerism, body posture, or anything else that could have given it away?

I'm trying to learn Tagalog by talking to my cousins in the Philippines through Myspace and such in Tagalog, but I sometimes have trouble translating what they're saying, and I don't want them to tell me what they're saying because that would defeat the purpose because like I said, I only need help some of the time.

Is there anyone that is fluent in Tagalog that is willing to help me?

Thanks
Since I message with my cousins daily, I need someone that can help translate daily as well. Most messages are very short.
Yup, I'm also in the US, in Florida. Mind if I email you what I need translated?
To godsdarkwarrior2000
Or maybe I just want a shot at translating it myself first? If I can't do it myself, that's when I email someone for help. It's a hassle asking my cousins to tell me what they said since they usually only log on once a day.

This is a Christmas card for my grandmother but from my 5 and 8 year old cousins. Since they are coming from Canada they are giving their Christmas card now while my grandmother is in the U.S. Both speak Tagalog and my grandma doesn't understand english so Im making a customized card she can understand:

With Love
To Grandma.

All the love in the world
is coming your way
With a wish for your happiest
Christmas Day!
Merry Christmas to you from us both.

please tell me if you altered the message because it is hard to to translate it exactly.

I only speak english and spanish so I cant translate it myself into tagalog.

I am Filipino, and my extended family speaks Tagalog [not my immediate family] I usually only see them around holidays, and only the older generations speak Tagalog [none of their children, so my cousins don't speak it]
I talked to my grandfather about wanting to learn it, and he said its useless because everyone in the Philippines speaks English anyways. [he didn't teach my father either]
I saw that on some of the websites I go to that a good amount of the people speak Tagalog, and if I wanted to practice I could probably practice in the groups centered around speaking in Tagalog.
However, apart from people online, is it worth my time to learn the language? It seems that in a few years the language will really not have any use, since the number of people who speak it are depleting.
Do you think I should learn it anyways?
note: I moved this from the language section to here, because I figured this section might be better >___>

Can someone please teach me how to speak tagalog, it can be through chat or voice chat. I just got back visiting my cousins from the Philippines and now i really want to learn so it would be easier for me to communicate with them. I understand it just cant speak it. Please email me at Naptownwrestler04@yahoo.com

i can speak both english and tagalog(filipino) and have learned arabic before but because of the teachers it never really stuck in mind. Im only able to read and understand a few words. also, i have cousins from belgium that i would love to communicate with. so which?

I just got back from the Philippines for the first time. I was raised speaking only English and when I was in the Philippines I couldn't speak anything to cousins or relatives. So what would be best to learn first, or what language would help me the most when I'm in the Philippines?

I am an American and have always been wondering why...

Personally, in my opinion I find it even more annoying when Filipinos try to speak full out English. I went to this mall once with my cousins and everytime I spoke back to them in Tagalog they spoke back to me in English... but the whole thing was just completely wrong... some of the grammar was off and i dont know... it just sounded like they were trying TOO hard, like forced, it just seemed very unnatural and made me want to leave.

I don't mind them speaking taglish because atleast they are incorporating some of their natural language into the speech but someone told me that its worse to speak in Taglish so I'm confused. Help!
Also my cousins are NOT rich. They didn't go to an international school and they also went to a bad college. They live in a countryside where pretty much everyone speaks tagalog. They JUST moved to Cebu City tho, like 4 months ago?
I can speak tagalog!!

I'm Mexican, with Filipino-American blood. And when my cousins from the Philippines come over, I can't understand them when they talk in Tagalog! Oh, and that other dialect they always speak, what was that? Ilocano, or something? Does anyone know any Ilocano?

I would like to go visit the Philippines and meet my cousins there but I don't want to not understand them when they are talking. Help?????
