I am half Filipino and I was born in CA...At my high school some guys make fun of or repeat what I say [in an accent]. how could I have worse English than everyone else who was not born in US? Is it because that I'm do't talk a lot? Any Suggestions? I feel so stupid... I always here this question: "You are born here, why is your English bad"?
Also I have a low vocabulary but I trying so hard to improve.
Thank you and please don't be so harsh. ^_^

I'm in the high school play "The Wedding Singer" and I play the part of Imelda Marcos. I'm not Asian or Filipino. I need to somehow learn to speak with her accent. The line I need help with is "Just back down, Glen. Robbie and Julia are in love." Please help if you can. Also, where can I learn how to say "Arnel akong n'gallan Imelda asamang banyo 'ninyo"

In the Philippines most of the Filipino can understand english compared to other asian countries. But how about the way they speak english? What can you say about their accent?

I am half Filipino and half Puerto Rican and was raised in the US. Both my parents speak Spanish fluently and I understand it. I however, don't speak Spanish I don't have much of an accent when I speak. Whenever someone that speaks Spanish finds out that I don't speak Spanish fluently they look disgusted. Like now I'm not Puerto Rican enough. Anyone have the same experience?

Tagaglog has always been the language spoken in my home, and my parents have/still always speak to me in tagalog. But over the years i've stopped speaking and started answering in english.

I have found that speaking tagalog is really difficult for me now. I understand it all. But speaking is so hard. It's hard for me to put sentences together. I'm self-concious when i try to speak because i have a horrible accent and know my grammer is all wrong.

I want to be able to speak tagalog again. To my family back in the philippines, and all my friends there. Now to my question...
I'm thinking about buying one of those Learn Tagalog programs i can get from the book store. I just want to know if it's worth it. If it will help me at all. I mean i understand tagalog. I can put basic sentences together... just not elaborate much. Will this program help me? Or do these programs just teach me the stuff i already know?
please no answers about just get your family to speak to you in tagalog. BECAUSE THEY DO. they have all my life. i'm around them 24/7. they speak tagalog to me 24/7. i just can't speak. i also now choose not to speak in front of them because it's embarassing how horrible my tagalog and my accent is.

Like, I can speak, understand, and know all of the grammar rules of Tagalog, there's just only one problem. My accent sucks. How can I improve it?
I am a pure-blooded Filipino born, and raised in the United States.

I am just a 12 year old girl from U.S. & I'm trying to pursue my acting career when I go to the Philippines. I could understand Tagalog, but I can't speak it fluently, but when I speak Tagalog I don't have an accent at all. I am really good in acting drama scenes & many more. I'm just wondering when I go to the Philippines what should I do first so I could get discovered as an actor ?
I am pretty tall for my age, but some people say I'm short. I have white skin , but I'm pretty chinky. I could sing and play the piano by ear if you need more details. If you want know how to look , just email me.

my mom grew up speaking tagalog (a dialect of the filipino language--she can still speak it), but speaks english now (fluently and almost without an accent). i asked her one day if she thought in tagalog, and she realized that she did. i'm wondering if this is the same for the majority of people who grow up speaking a language other than english.

I talk at a really fast pace, usually people have trouble understanding me, but people I am close to have become use to it, and understand me, it's kinda like someone with an accent, people who spend a lot of time with me, just learn to understand what I'm saying. Anyways, is there any reason as to why I talk so fast? My mother is Filipino, and i've noticed that all Filipinos when speaking in Tagalog talk extremely fast, could this be where I learnt to talk so fast? One of my friends is also half Filipino and she talks fast too. But yeah, I have become more aware of it though, and usually slow down when I'm talking.

To give you an indication of how fast I talk, watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6XLswqiX0s I can say the whole song easily, I actually have to slow down on the line about getting to Letterman, cause I say it too fast.

So yeeeeah, if you have any ideas as to why I talk so fast, let me know! :) )
sunil v - I've read a few things that say that, but I must honestly say that I think that's Bullshi*t! No offence to you for answering though! haha. But yeah, that's definitely not why I speak fast. I read something that said that it's cause they have low self worth and no self confidence, and I know that's not me. And I know that I was always listened to by my parents, it's just a weird habbit haha

Have you heard some italians talk? They talk real fast and sometimes it sounds funny. It is almost as syllabic as Japanese. But Japanese and Korean languages(all the altaic ones) get mistaken for a cantonese/viet/filipino language and accent.

Why do the english make fun of italians when their language is based in latin?

not their native tongue with an accent?
i was raised in manila, so it's tagalog here, i find it cute to hear people of other regions speak tagalog in an accent of their place and mostly can guess what regions they are from.
but now that pinoys are global, i find it quite amusing to hear spoken tagalog from those who have spent long years in a foreign country such as those from the different states of America, Japan,China, different nations of Europe, the arab countries.
however my wife don't like me speak bikol with a tagalog accent

i speak english very good but not fluently and i still got an accent because most of the time i speak tagalog so im just wondering can somebody help me where i can learn english perfectly and maintain my tagalog language....

Does anyone? How long did it take you to learn? I want to learn ilocano, is it better to learn when I speak Tagalog fluently? I know people who can teach me Ilocano (she's my godmother, she is an Ilocana who grew up in Agusan Del Sur, will her accent differ from a person who grew up in Ilocos?

Could you tell which province or region a Filipino is a native of, by the way she or he speaks in Tagalog or English, i.e., intonation, accent, choice of words, etc?

I could tell if someone is Ilonggo by her manner of speech, though I couldn't tell if she's from Bacolod or Iloilo. But some Ilonggos could even identify the town another Ilonggo is from, by listening to him speak.

With a Batangenyo accent? Visayan accent, or Bulakenyo accent?

How's the Tagalog accent in Manila anyway?
Does any of you speak Tagalog the way Mommy Dionisio do?

To the Filipino Americans here do u speak Tagalog? Do u sound like Gerard Anderson when speaking Tagalog?

Hiya! Okay, imma filipino, born in Australia, and the weird thing is that i can understand tagalog all the time.....but i can't speak it...... well not fluently anyways. =_= Is this normal? Or am i just weird? ;p
I'm trying to learn how to speak tagalog fluently, but i cant get the accent right.... >.< Any advice on how to improve?
Much appreciated ^_^

For my English report, I have to talk about the Filipino American sub-culture. If anyone can provide links of info about them that would be great. Please, do not send me biographies of people. I need factual information about them in general.

Or if you know something about Filipino Americans already, lemme kno!

Stuff that would be good to know about them are:
How they grow up with the American lifestyle
Their balance in accent
How parents treat them
Their aim on their careers
Their behavior

You get the idea. Any info can be good! Thanks.

i just dont feel comfortable speaking in tagalog in other countries, i feel like the accent is funny..... if u've heard someone speak tagalog, what does it sound like? i mean, if you hear someone speak, what language comes into ur mind? JUST WANNA GET SOME IDEAS... NOTHING PERSONAL
ok thx 4 ur answers, but what about it? if u hear it, what language comes into ur mind? spanish? chinese? or somthin else?

Just wondering why some people are like that?

here's my story:
I went to Greenbelt Ayala 2 days ago together with my family. Then behind us there's a group of girls walking and they are all talking in taglish and also I heard one girl tried to talk in Filipino all the time (which I like) but the other girls responded all in English/taglish most of the time.

Do you find it annoying? I mean... If the question was in Filipino and they answered it correctly in English... it means.. they obviously understood it, am i right? Why not just say it in Filipino?

After all, they are all Pinays..(because of the accent, you can tell if they are raised or born in an English-Speaking country) talking in Filipino is not shameful. They might be studying in some prestigious wherein English is encouraged.. but c'mon.. Taglish is just not right!

Let me know your opinions! Thanks! :)
If you are raised or born in an English-Speaking country... you don't count. We understand how hard it might be for you to talk. I'm just talking about those people who are trying hard.

When I say Filipino... i mean.. it could be any dialects in the Philippines not just tagalog.

i am filipino and i was born in America and i usually don't have an accent.
