‘When there is a will, there is always a way’ !
)
…If a ‘foreigner’ really makes up his/her mind to genuinely learn an Asian language, he/she can become capable of communicating his/her thoughts in about 3 months.
But when one adopts a foreigner’s attitude, and condescendingly decides to ‘oblige the locals’ by learning their ‘native tongue’, one seldom makes any headway !
The Philippine language is easy to learn because the letters sound just one way. For example, "a" is always pronounced like the "a" of "ask".
It took an exchange student 1 month to speak the language fluently with the aid of a good Tagalog-English/ English-Tagalog dictionary.
The locals were charmed to see a non-local speak the language fluently.
It depends on your needs and how hard you apply yourself to it. Reading is easy. Speaking is OK.
However, many foreigners find it quite confusing when it comes to conjugation of verbs. The best way to learn tagalog is by Nature Method. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Filipinos will be very happy to help you and guide you to your learning. Though, it will take time and real effort to learn a new language – but it is worth your efforts.
In my opinion Tagalog is one of the easiest non-romance languages for Westerners to pick up. It is made all the more easier the more Filipinos have incessantly dumbed its working vocabulary down over the past few decades by incorporating English and other slang words into its colloquial use.
The reasons so few Westerner expats , especially Americans, speak it are two-fold:
(a) They have no intrinsic respect for its true value compared to other languages;
(b) Their Filipino acquaintances continue to marginalize its value, often "imploring" them that it’s not worth learning.
i think learning another langauage requires determination and interest, otherwise, you’ll definitely not learn anything…
tagalog is easy to learn esp if ur an english speaker since most of the letters in tagalog are the same as in english…
it’s amusing to us only because of the accent but we feel proud if a foreigner takes the time to learn our language
not if you try. some foreigner doesn’t want to learn. my husband speak cebuano. people think its funny and kind a cool. it will take years until you fully speak the language but you’ll learn little by little.
if they have the motivation, they will learn tagalog fast. everyday, watch and listen to tagalog TV shows and that would make the learning even faster.
some takes 2-3 years but here in our place clark where lots of American having their vacation and finding there Filipina love ones some really not interested in learning to speak tagalog.
For Me Im impressed to Foreigners who learned to how to speak tagalog.
Ive tried to learn to speak it – but unless your around filipinos or people who speak tagalog and can help you – its hard like any language.
Id love to learn to speak it – and even considering a course to learn tagalog. But i need to be around people who speak it all the time so i can pick it up easier.
No point in learning a language if your not around people who speak it.
