Spanish is actually not that difficult to learn for most English speakers, so if you’re someone who speaks English and Filipino fluently, you’ve got a bit of an advantage. Even more so if you speak a Philippine tongue that uses more Spanish vocabulary than Filipino (i.e. Chavacano and Cebuano). Much of the vocabulary and pronunciation are similar, although Spanish grammar is nothing like Filipino grammar. I’m sure that there are Spanish language schools or courses in the Philippines, but a more specific location might help narrow down your options.
I think knowing Tagalog has it’s advantages in learning Spanish thatn an English-only speaker trying to learn Spanish.
No language is impossible if you’re willing to practice. Filipino is rich in spanish so many words will be quite similar. In some cases, words are opposite (such as siguro).
If you want to be fluent, you will have to work at it. The question is not, "Is it easy". The correct question is, "Are you willing to put forth all the effort you need to master the subject"?
Yes, it is easier for Filipinos.
Inquire at Instituto Cervantes. http://manila.cervantes.es/en/default.shtm
Other language schools are in Makati and the Ortigas area, but since they teach other languages as well, Instituto Cervantes is your best bet.
I just returned from the Philippines on a five country Asia Tour. It’s funny how that nation is They have Spanish names for the streets, cities & most sites yet english for the type of place it is.ie……Angeles City or Espana Avenue. The Filipinos kept the Spanish last names in order to get grants from the Spanish Govt. at the turn of the 19th Century. As most all Filipinos spoke English while I was in the Philippines I feel you shouldn’t have any problems learning the language.I’m not Filipino BTW yet enjoyed my visit there.
YES it is easy for filipinos to speak spanish. Some places in the middle part of the philippines still uses spanish. my alma mater has s particular subject for spanish and frech languages. i think ateneo and UP does too.
Some words are the same.Next time you are talking to a Spanish guy ask him if he likes Puto.
A Filipino should learn Portuguese.
Yes, it is easy especially if Filipino already knows Cebuano or Chavacano……I can understand some of Tagalog because it has many Spanish words,,,,,,
I had Spanish 1 last year, and boy was it easy. It will be easy at first but after a while it will get harder and harder. My teacher always complimented me and once I told her I was Filipino she immediately said "No Wonder!"
There are some words that have different meanings, like "tocino" which is bacon but I’m more used to thinking it’s a name for a certain pork in the Philippines. And Seryoso, which is Serious but in Spanish it’s "Serio" not Seryoso. And when I say "Serio" what comes to mind is that male lead from "Mari-Mar" Sergio.
The grammar is totally different and a lot of words have different meanings although they sound the same. On the course of learning Spanish 1 I also noticed a few similarities and I’m not sure if it’s origin is Spanish, like "kanino", which is ‘whom’ in English, in Spanish ‘who’ is "quien" and it kinda sounds alike. Also "Ito" which is ‘this’ in English, in Spanish ‘this’ is "esto" ….see the similarity?
Tagalog can sound Spanish or Japanese from an untrained ear, but after hearing it so much there is still a major difference that sets it apart from Spanish and other languages it can be compared to.
