If I was to learn a Filipino dialect, what should I learn?
My mom's side almost all of them virtually live in Northern Mindanao and around Cebu. I'm a Filipino-American and I'm not sure which I should learn. My mom knows Visayan, Tagalog, and something else.

learn bisaya and tagalog. Tagalog is the national dialect so when you go anywhere in the Phil everyone speaks and understand tagalog so it wont be a problem for you. As for bisaya, a bisaya person can talk bad things about you without u knowing it because u dont understand. Bisaya people tend to hang out with the same group. They have different jokes compare to the tagalog people and they also have different style. Learn both but if you have to choose one id say tagalog.
Of course you should learn tagalog, because it is the major dialect of the country.
In Mindanao and Cebu are Visaya, so learn also visaya.
Im actually a Capampangan, you know that?
You should better start with the Filipino national language which is almost 99% made of Tagalog dialect because almost all Filipino speak it from Luzon to Mindanao. If you are fluent with it already, you can easily communicate with everyone in the Philippines. Then learn next of the Visayan dialect because of of the words have similarity with Tagalog.
ask your mom and your relatives of on mom’ side to teach you….
you can also buy tagalog-english dictionary or better yet google it!
learn them all
… you should learn TAGALOG because it is the most used dialect in our country, after you have learned TAGALOG then you can now step into another language that you like to learn.
i recommend not to learn bisaya because bisaya are always talkative even you watch wowowee you will see there
pretty rhetoric if you ask me.
learn Bisaya because your mom speaks Bisaya and Tagalog because everyone in the country understands Tagalog thanks to local television.
I recommend that you learn Ilocano (sp?) if you go into the rural parts of The Philippines & Tagalog if you’re in da city=) cuz most Filipinos speak Tagalog!!!
If you are planning for a trip to Cebu and Mindanao, then Visayan is the dialect you should learn.
the tagalog ang bisaya..because they are i think the common..
I would suggest to Learn BISAYA first because your MOM from MINDANAO.. Learn BISAYA takes only 6 months.
After that …
Then later you can Learn Tagalog it takes only 2 months
If you know BISAYA then TAGALOG is easy after BISAYA.
you should learn to speak TAGALOG first =p
it’s easier that way ^_^
Bisaya,
Ilocano,
Bicolano,
Kapampangan.
you should learn tagalog first then visaya because that is the lingo of your mom
Learn Tagalog first… then you could learn other dialects that your mom knows, such as Cebuano…
you should learn visayan language
FIRST LEARN TAGALOG BECAUSE MOST FILIPINOS USE THAT LANGUAGE…
THEN TRY VISAYAN NEXT….
