Just field your questions on the board and you will get immediate responses guaranteed. Keep on posting.
Although I believe you may be worrying too much for nothing. All you need would be few and simple words of greetings and respect since most of Filipinos, even the poor ones, know enough English (even if with a little different diction) just to get by in a conversation.
And by trying to explain yourself with a few Tagalog words, you will surely endear yourself with your girlfriend’s parents.
But are you sure that your girlfriend comes from the Tagalog speaking region? There are many dialects in the Philippines like Ilocano, Pangasinan, Visayan, Ilonggo, Bicolano…. etc.
Other than some simple expressions that you’ll find by doing a web search, you’re not going to find a charity that gives free, miraculous, instantaneous language learning lessons. Learning a second (or third, etc) language is a time-consuming but very fulfilling process (can be financially rewarding, too).
Once you’ve come to the realization that you will have to spend time and money. The 2 best options out there (other than formal classes) are Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone.
If you are just concerned with speaking and understanding, and time is a factor, Pimsleur (audio cassettes and CD’s) is the way to go. If you need to read and write then go with Rosetta Stone software.
If you’re serious about your girl, then the time and money will be well worth it.
What would you like to say? I can translate for you. You can learn words here and there. Also keep this in mind, Filipinos CAN speak English. It’s nice that you are trying to learn the language, though.
It’s nice that you are interested in learning to speak Tagalog. But take note that many Filipinos know how to speak in English. It’s not hard for English-speaking foreigners to talk to Filipinos.
Anyway, I don’t know any kind of free software. But here are some links in which you can learn basic Filipino words and sentences:
http://www.everlastinglove.com/tagalog.htm
http://www.tagalog1.com/
http://www.learntagalognow.com/
http://learnfilipino.podomatic.com/ (This is fun to read.)
But if you really want to have some kind of software, try Rosetta Stone.
Good luck!
You can just speak in English to them, almost every Filipino(not Phillipine) understands it.
By the way, since you’re meeting the parents, it would be more polite if you [mano] them. Take one of their hands and bring it to your forehead. It’s used for the elderly.
