Turning a word into the past tense is not as easy in Tagalog as it seems in English. In fact, Tagalog doesn`t have "tense", it has "aspects" (completed, incompleted, contemplated). You also need to know the focus of verb, in order to add the right affix to it.
A thorough explanation will be too lengthy to post here, but this web page describes aspects and focus very well:

For example:
to ask = magtanong
asked = nagtanong
You don’t want the suffix, you want to learn how to put verbs in the past tense. Unfortunately, I don’t know.
