In the Philippines most people understand you when you are speaking English. But the English speaking might be kinda "broken" or taglish (Tagalog/English). You should be fine but if you really want to know a little of the basic you should go to the bookstore and buy one of those Filipino/English dictionary. It's just a little book on some basic conversational lines like "how are you", "What is you name", and they get into other things like how to ask for some thing like directions or health terms. I'm Filipino and it takes patients and time to learn this language as well as other laguages. But I just learn by listening. When I was young everyone around me spoke in tagalog so I just listen and sometimes my parents speak in tagalog when they are made at me...lol.
