Do you just hate it when you talk to them in Filipino and they answer you in English?
Just wondering why some people are like that?
here's my story:
I went to Greenbelt Ayala 2 days ago together with my family. Then behind us there's a group of girls walking and they are all talking in taglish and also I heard one girl tried to talk in Filipino all the time (which I like) but the other girls responded all in English/taglish most of the time.
Do you find it annoying? I mean... If the question was in Filipino and they answered it correctly in English... it means.. they obviously understood it, am i right? Why not just say it in Filipino?
After all, they are all Pinays..(because of the accent, you can tell if they are raised or born in an English-Speaking country) talking in Filipino is not shameful. They might be studying in some prestigious wherein English is encouraged.. but c'mon.. Taglish is just not right!

If you are raised or born in an English-Speaking country... you don't count. We understand how hard it might be for you to talk. I'm just talking about those people who are trying hard.
When I say Filipino... i mean.. it could be any dialects in the Philippines not just tagalog.

Growing up here in the States makes your mind more open to this kind of things… I have friends who speaks Spanglish (Spanish & English). An American friend of mine though finds it annoying when people combine english with other dialects.
There’s a lot of Filipino immigrants here in the US that have children who does not speak the language(tagalog) anymore, and it’s so disappointing. What would Dr. Jose Rizal think of them it he were still alive up to this day?
"Sa mga Pinoy naman na english ng english (good for you). Pero kung nag english ka lang dahil gusto mo mag mukhang sosyal ang masasabi ko sa mga ganun eh kadiri kayo(Kris Aquino type). Yung mga call center agents naman wag na kayo mag english sa labas ng office nyo di naman kayo binabayaran eh sa trabaho na lang kayo mag salita ng english."

I find Taglish a little annoying too but I guess it’s just me or just the few of us. Everyone in the Phils. is used to hearing Taglish from TV shows and hosts, case in point, Kris A.
If someone asks talks to me in English, I’ll reply with English, if someone asks me a question in Tagalog then I’ll answer in Tagalog, and if in sign language, well sorry, I only know one sign language
well, it is a typical situation when you go a mall , like ayala green belt people on those places a "social kuno’ or the yuppies if you like to hear all lokal dialects people go to quiapo area there , they are all tagolog and muslim dialect

i find taglish annoying when they speak it with some sort of angelica panganiban-ish accent.
yeah, it’s pretty annoying… but there are many English words than cannot be translated in Tagalog… like if someone says "I’m going to shop in the mall", you can’t say "Mamimili ako sa tindahan" because you’re not going to buy something from the store or market, you’ll go to the mall to shop, so generally, Filipinos say "Mag-shoshoping ako sa mall", which actually makes more sense…
let em….it would be annoying only when one of the group cannot comprehend any filipino or english word. If they find it in according to their standards, it’s for them,not for us.
pinoys are not the only users of combining english with the local dialect, even other nations or cultures do it.
yes, it is wrong, academically, but would you consider it wrong to use a present pinoy slang word with the words our grandparents are accustomed?
Yeah me too, I dislike hearing those in public, especially those people who you know are just trying hard. They give me the goosebumps.
But just to be fair, there are people who are brought up that way, perhaps they lived abroad for a long time or are just used in speaking English. To those people, I think it’s okay. But for those "pasosyal" people… tsk, tsk.
i find Taglish annoying, too! my family and i are now in the US and i meet a lot of filipinos here who don’t speak Tagalog anymore – i asked them why and they tell me that they can’t speak Tagalog anymore but they still can understand it. it’s astonishing how easily our countrymen adapt and forget our native language. that’s why i always talk to my kids in tagalog and i expect them to talk in our native tongue when they’re talking to filipinos, it’s my way of showing how proud i am that i still know where i came from.
the entire question for filipinos who no longer accept Tagalog as their language is that – what race do you belong when you can’t understand or speak Tagalog but you’re obviously not white, black, yellow, etc…? you won’t know where you belong unless you accept and treasure your own heritage.
Have you considered that the group is trying to improve there English skills and the one just won’t play.

Nowadays talking in Taglish is their cool thing. Very uncool. They should remember Rizal’s "Ang hindi marunong magmahal sa sariling wika ay higit pa ang amoy sa mabahong isda".
I find it annoying too. I prefer either/or. English or Tagalog or Cebuano or Ilonggo, not a fruit salad of all. Who are we showing off for in our country? Majority of Filipinos speak and understand English anyway. It’s not like they are learning and practicing their English speaking skills. They are actually voluntarily degrading it.

Tagalog should be answered in Tagalog , same as in English. Its as simple as that.
I am generally not for speaking in Taglish, although for some Filipinos they have to do that for necessity & not by choice.
I am a bit old-fashioned & so my take on this is if you are asked something in Tagalog, respond in straight Tagalog, if in English then in straight English. It is really not that hard. Except for some Filipinos born &/or raised abroad who do understand but do not speak Tagalog.

I go and continue the conversation using the most arcane Tagalog words I could think of and laugh secretly inside while they try unravel what I just said.
i have to admit that i’ll be guilty as charged.
the simple reason is that i was brought up speaking and thinking in both Tagalog and English equally and growing up, was not even exposed to Tagalog movies and tv shows…and to think that I grew up in Manila. (i know, i know!) my parents just wanted to ensure that i was able to master English as well as i mastered Tagalog. so, although the question is in Tagalog, it sometimes catches me in the middle of an English thought and I respond in English. I also respond in Tagalog sometimes when my friends ask me questions in English.
by the way, i’m the least "konyo" person out there. middle class family, coed school, buys my clothes in the ukay2, uses public the jeepney every day…

Taglish in the sense of "coño speak" really annoys me.
But sometimes there are words in Tagalog that can’t be directly translated into English and vice versa; for me, that is a good excuse for mixing Tagalog and English. Otherwise, I find it annoying that some people couldn’t complete a single sentence in just one language: Filipino or English. They just have to choose.
No, not really. Have it cross your mind that not all filipino speaks tagalog.
I am pretty bad at it , so i use taglish. If I am in manila i speak taglish most of the time to get my points across although i can understand tagalog.true you can forget the words when you are in some other places.
I know one born and raised in davao but only speaks english, can understand both local dialect and tagalog but is used to conversing in english (possibly had a foreign parent) so he used it all the time. the reason might be that he gets the odd looks and laughs when he tries to speak the local language with a funny thwang and wrong accent & words, which i can relate to since when i tried learning bisaya i get that same reaction from a lot of people. It doesn’t bother me that much but sometimes it gets to you , so english or taglish or a combination which i can convey my message.
They do it to other Filipinos? I thought they did it to foreigners only. What I find even hilarious is how some Pinoys are shy to speak to a Kano ( who happens to be a non English speaking German) and te Pinoys feel shy because they are afraid of making a mistake in English. But the German’s English is ten times worse.
Taglish is fine as long as you don’t overdo it to the point of being "cońio" (which I do hate, by the way). Pinays who do this are usually the ones who work in call centers. That’s my observation, though.
I live in Vancouver.. That is not the way I see it… I mean.. My cousins and I spent the whole summer their in the Philippines.. It was our first time for so many years. I admit we can understand Tagalog but not that much.. As long as it is not too fast and if you are actually talking to the person face to face. So most of our relatives there talk to us in Tagalog but in our case, we understood Ilonggo better (our parents are from Bacolod originally). I don’t mind speaking Filipino which I’m happy I can still speak a few sentences.. Our relatives said we sound funny when we try to speak Filipino.. But I never thought it may sound annoying to other people..That doesn’t mean I’m ashamed, that I can understand it but I can’t speak it straight… That is just too bad
hmmm… don’t you find that appealing instead… we are bilingual at heart… otherwise learn maximum tolerance
although when somebody speaks to me in English (broken or impeccable) who I know understands Tagalog, I answer in pure Tagalog… it’s the non-conformist in me! ;D
I understand about being born or raised in an English-Speaking country, but it really does annoy when people KNOW how to speak tagalog but respond in english, i just think there making themselves look more "sophisticated?" and "cool" i guess. But I have to agree with you. Very nice question.
When other people do that doesn’t constitute your "standards" that doesn’t mean that they are someone who you think they are. In other words that’s none of your business. But sometimes when you got to say something of what you heard then you’ll be a little bit intrusive. Of course there are little bit over bearing people around us but for as long as we leave them alone then the world will be better for all of us. For as long as they didn’t hurt you or anyone then you shouldn’t get bothered.
At the end of the day that’s how we thinks counts as a result that’s exposes your behaviour and attitude probably same as the person you were talking about. What’s the difference?

it used to annoy me too but when i came back from wherever ive been it’s really really hard to speak tagalog again.. anyway have fun shopping!! lol
Linguists term this phenomenon as "code switching" and it is very ubiquitous in bilingual or multilingual countries. For instance, I grew up with 4 languages and I freely switch between all 4 without putting much thought into it. If someone speaks to me in Chinese, and I know that they can understand English and Filipino, my response can have all 3 languages in the same sentence. It’s just how we were brought up. This is not unique to me or my community. People in other countries do the same as well.
However, there’s another underlying reason why Filipinos speak in "Taglish." In the Philippines, knowledge of the English language is commonly equated with being smart or intelligent. So when people speak in English (no matter how grammatically poor it is), they think that other people will respect them more or value more what they have to say. In addition, speaking in English (in the Philippines) is also equated with being "high society" (sosyal) while speaking in the local vernacular tends to be equated with being "common" (pang masa).
i soooo hate this too. i usually hear conversations like
Girl1: hey, have you made kain na ba?
Girl2: no pa eh, i’m very gutom na nga.
DUH! why can’t you just speak straight english or filipino? i have been trained to complete a sentence in strictly filipino or english. it’s just plain annoying when people (especially girls) use taglish just to give off the coño aura. SUCKS for me!!!
Hello, be reasonable. Why hate them?? There is no rules in learning or speaking different language as long your communication is effective. No matter what language you are using, accent and so forth.
The ability of people to talk is one of the skills especially if this is not our mother tongue language. We are intelligent, precise and easy to comprehend and english is the official language.As long her friend can communicate effectively and comfortable with her then everything is alright. Good for her too and for both of them.
