Philippines Tagalog Archives

Hi, I will be joining the Air Force soon (in DEP) and wondering, I'm very proficient in Tagalog (Philippine Language) and I want to know how this will benefit me in the Air Force? How can I utilize this skill? Thanks!

I have bought several products like Pimsleur and Living Language Cd's to learn Tagalog. The dialogues they teach and you learn are not at all how the Pinoy people talk or expect you to talk to them. I was feeling proud about learning some chapters and said some words to my wife who is Pinoy and I insulted her by only starting a sentence with "Hoy" which is "Hey" which I found is very disrespectful. Again, does anyone know a good software for Tagalog that teaches the proper language with a little culture also.

I use to watch Filipino drama all the time, and the shows too, like Mula Sa Puso, I think many filipino actors/actress have all stopped with the show business and started hiring new ones that don't even know how to act. I love Dolphy, Cesar Montano, etc.... I support alot of my culture, but it makes me sad that all shows at the same time aired there are just copied to some random Show/Movie from a foreign as part of its plot. Why can't shows talk about like, for example, filipino with regular lives, struggle, and so on, or about teens and peer preasure, a life of a province girl/guy or a jeepney driver? You know what I'm talking about, the lives of real filipinos, and daily lives. Instead of the Rich VS Poor and the rich are the villains and the poor are the good guys. Another thing that bothers me is that sometimes a certain Drama or show that is good, it takes forever for it to end. I don't like the whole over-reacting too in the shows.

I am doing IB Self-Taugh (Filipino) And I need to find the translation versions of these books.
But I can't seem to find any. It would be easier if I'd have the title and author.

1. Kitchen-Banana Yoshimoto
2. Of Mice And Men- John Steinback
3. The Old Man And The Sea- Ernest Hemmingway

I need any ideas for Poster Making with theme of "Wikang Filipino: Mula sa Baler hanggang buong Pilipinas." ("Filipino Language: From Baler to the whole Philippines"; Baler is a place of Aurora, Phil. where Filipino language was declared as national language of the philippines by Manuel Quezon).

My grandfather tells me to give up language-learning since multilingual people are seen to be geeks and nerds, and warned me that I might be considered some kind of traitor to our Filipino language, or something along those lines. I don't know whether he's doing this to make me change my mind about devoting my entire life to mastering 18 languages (not including English and Tagalog, of course, I think I'm quite proficient in them already). But I'm still a bit aggravated by his comments, and so decided to ask here on yahooanswers, (where people will be more keen on giving honest opinions), instead of simply asking my Filipino mateys (who will undoubtedly tell me that there's nothing wrong with what I'm doing, but there's a possibility that they might not be so frank about it). So, going back to my question.......how are multilinguals seen in the Philippines, or more particularly there in Luzon (I know that knowing 3-4 languages is okay, but how about someone who's got 10 languages+ under their belt? Is such a person considered a stigma, like in Britain (unfortunately)? Please give me an HONEST answer, and a detailed one if possible. It doesn't matter if the answer is like: You're so gonna be considered a dweeb or a geek, that there's no chance of you successfully wooing a run-off-the-mill Filipina, if she knows you're into languages.

Btw I'm still on the lookout for any fellow Filipino who's got the same ambitions as I am.
I plan on attaining at least C1-level fluency in Estonian, Ukrainian, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, German, Dutch, French, Russian, Bulgarian, Finnish, and Hungarian
before I die, of course
by the way, thank you very much for the 2 Filipinos who've posted here. I'm waiting for an additional 3 helpful and honest opinions from Filipinos. If you have difficulty in voicing your opinion, simply watch this (videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAtWuQmdexs), and tell me whether he would be treated badly in Luzon, or will he still be able to fit in. The man in the video is not me by the way!

I have a Filipino lover. Can anyone give me some phrases that may turn him on in the Tagalog language and then the meaning in English.

I'm interested in learning and hearing from people with good and hell-like experiences that has been in Japan for a while or so and want to know how life is there. I'm hearing several sides of this issue like discrimination, language barriers, hardships, stress, survival, political-social-economic issues, and many more. Other proffesions too but more specifically, nursing. I understand that culture and language can be a problem sometimes but am really wanting to know what "real" life in Japan is as a foreign worker from experiences. Thanks.

I would like to say in advance I am not trying to start anything unproductive, I’m just curious in people’s opinions on this subject.

Today, I was thinking about how many Americans tend to call themselves Americans with something at the beginning that connects somewhere else. Irish American, Italian American, African American, Chinese American, Korean American, etc. and I couldn’t help to think why. Though this is a belief I’ve always had, I thought I bring on here to try to find other people’s opinions so I can at least try to understand why they do so.

My opinion on this matter is somewhat simple. First things first, nationality squashes all. So before your this and that, your an American, or British, or a Canadian, or French. Second, connect with people who have similar beliefs, morals, ethics, interest, faith, residency, nationalities and other things on that line to you and not by, my father’s father, father father came from this country, so that makes me __________.

But when it comes to this matter, I defiantly don’t see the need for some things that some people do. So as the concept of connecting with you culture and heritage, as if those two were the same thing. Seeing how you’re born into a culture and not with one. So the same way an “Italian” American can “relate” with Italian culture, a Pilipino man who has no background to Italy can be born into that culture and pick up the culture. Pick up the Italian language, eat and become accustomed to Italian food, attend Catholic churches, and the many other parts of Italian culture. I, as an American who is Black, feel no connection to any other country then the United States, and countries I’ve visited and stayed for a decent amount of time. I feel no connections to any African nations, since I was not born there and have not direct family there, Parents, Cousins, Uncles Grandparents, Etc.

Now that does not mean that I am not for connection by personality and Characteristics. I, as an American, feel a connection to people such as Martin Luther King and Frederick Douglass, but I also feel those same connections to people like Thomas Edison and Abraham Lincoln. Why? Because as I call myself an American, they were as well. But not only because of the fact I was birthed into this country and raised in this society, but because I love this country. As a Deist, I connect with people such Thomas Paine and Lord Herbert of Cherbury. Why? Because since they were Deist, any in many ways and forms made Deism more well known, I can connect with them. As a Social Democrat I can connect with people such as Eduard Bernstein and even George Orwell. Why again? Because they were supporters who helped bring political change that I consider to be most important in my political views. Now, none of this is drawn from, what I said earlier, my father’s father father or my mother’s mother mother is from __________________.

Like I said, I’m curious to hear people’s opinion on this matter. I did spend some time typing this up so I would appreciate it if people don’t answer with trolling type answers just to get the points.

I am confused, since Philippines has lots of dialects but only one considered language which is filipino a.k.a. tagalog.

I'm a freshman in high school, fluent in English (I hope, lol) and sorta-kinda-on-my-way to being proficient in Spanish. I practice Spanish with my mom, who is from the Philippines and speaks Tagalog.

Anyway, I LOVE languages and would really like to start learning a second. French is such a pretty language, and it's spoken in a lot of Canada, in France and some smaller surrounding European countries, and throughout Africa. It ranks as pretty useful in most polls/lists/etc. However, it seems like everyone speaks Spanish or French, and having a really unique language under my belt seems like a good idea too, so I was thinking Tagalog (Filipino) since I could talk with my family and I have heritage ties there. However, it's only spoken in one country and even then not everyone in the Philippines speaks it, so it's usefulness is limited.

So, will knowing Spanish and French give me enough of an advantage in the world as far as college/future jobs, or are they too common as 2nd-languages in America? Will learning the obscure language of my heritage end up being useless? Should I aim for something middle-ground like German or Russian maybe? Opinions please! :)

Not mahalo! I also would like to know how to pronounce it in the language. I've seen maihalo used in veit, Filipino, and japanese. ex: "I just maihalo also." Please no negative comments just help full ones. Thanks!

What is up with Filipino Americans? why do they lie about having Spanish blood in them? They don't even look Spanish. Some of them even say that todays Filipinos are actually Mexicans. I looked it up because i couldn't believe it because they look like Asians or South East Asians, and learned that only 3% of 87 million Filipinos have any European ancestry, not necessarily Spanish, but the funny thing is 97% of the Filipinos that tell me what they are say they are Spanish Filipinos. I just don't get it? why are they lying?

*note* I'm only talking about Filipino Americans here.
oh and for those who don't know why Filipinos have Spanish names, it wasnt because the have Spanish blood in them. Here is info why the Spaniards gave Filipinos Spanish names.

oh and Elvi, im not saying that they are mixed with Mexicans i'm saying they are not but they tell people they are.

*and to the others, i am not cliaiming to know all Fil Ams but i know over a hundred of them due to a few circumstances such as i run the local Filipino Basketball League, and i can only go on what i hear and see obviously.
reply to SBD1.
I didnt call everyone liars, i called Filipino Americans liars, and i admit i used the wrong wording i should have said most. I have read up on Filipino history and i even know Filipinos who tell me, in fact it was those Filipinos (not the ones im accusing) that told me about the IMSCF Syndrome.

2ndly, i believe that it is you and quite a number of Fil Ams that need a shrink lol, ESPECIALLY going on the info you guys (people replying) are trying to pass up as fact. You guys are really touchy when someone publicly reveals the truth about Filipinos and the % that have Spanish. You only need to read up on The Philippines from credible research such as the sites ive been going to (www.gov.ph site from Philippines, only 1 of the sites ), to know that Your Spanish surnames were given to you and not out of ancestory.

some of you FilAms actually think like white people in the sense you group Asians as being oriental chinese or korean type Asians.
Indians dont care about being Asian, why? because its just a fact of life, they come from a country that is geographically in Asia, deal with it. Malays, Indonesians dont care being called Asian even though theyre language has alot of similaritys with Maori and Hawaiin and theyre culture is so different to an Oriental one, why? because they are in ASIA. I have been to The Philippines and Filipinos there are real nice people and they think of themselves as asian as well. Thats why i directed the question at Filipino Americans, because its the Filipino Americans that have such a problem with their identity.

seriously, some of you are real touchy and its kinda proving my point with some of your answers.

What are the elements of poetry? (Elemento ng Tula) I need a Filipino answer.
Please include the website if you have.

my friend received a text message from an unknown person with different Filipino dialect.. i'm not sure if it's in bisaya, ilocano, etc. can someone translate this please in tagalog or in english:

'Ke kaw anay bakal bahog sang baboy peneser ang bakla.ke'

it seems like it's a derogative message :(

thanks a lot.
@John Gagnon - what dialect is this?

How do you say, 'Hello! Thanks for being my friend!' in Filipino? My friend is from Filipino and I think it would amaze her if I were to say this to her in her language, since she has worked so hard to speak in my language, I should do the same. Any answers? <33

tagalog version?

Hi, Im planning to learn another language. I am Filipino. Im fluent in English and Ive been studying French for 4 years now. Im torn between Spanish and German. Learning which language will be more beneficial to me? Thank you!!

I am learning Tagalog as well as trying to learn the other various Filipino dialects so the more you break everything down the better for me, this goes for all of my questions for that matter.
Thank you.

AND NO ANSWERS THAT CAN'T HELP

Hi,
I love learning languages. I've learned most of Japanese and Cantonese and English in three-seven years. However, I'd like to learn Ilokano--a Filipino language.

Since money is low, I'm wondering if any one knows how I can learn it for free or for no higher than 5-15$?

My boyfriend speaks this language and has taught me some basics but I'd like to learn more so I could converse with him in his language and English.

Help, please?

can you please translate "good night and talk to you later" to tagalog ?
