I don’t speak Tagalog, however, I have quite a few Filipino friends.
In their opinion, there aren’t too many programs on today’s market that teach Tagalog well (this goes for other languages too). While they might teach you basic phrases, grammar (which is extremely important when learning a language) is totally ignored.
You could try purchasing a Tagalog phrasebook, but that alone will not help you to truly learn the language. See if your community has a Filipino church. They might offer classes in Tagalog on the weekends. In that kind of environment, you’ll have a teacher who will teach you vocabulary, grammar, colloquialisms, etc. Good luck!
get hold of a lot of filipino songs and filipino dramas..just listen to them (watch) whenever you can..this will help you get familiar with the language..read song lyrics with english translations so you’ll know the meaning of words and the structure of the sentences…it’s easier to learn through hearing so hopefully after doing this for a while, you’ll get familiar with certain words and so when you get to listen other songs or watch dramas you’ll have an idea of the meaning of some words, etc..
