I understand that there is a legal requirement in the Philippines for Filipinos age 21-25 to have a written statement from the parents saying they understand that their child intends to marry. Is it proper etiquette for an American man who wishes to marry a 22-year-old Filipina to ask her father for his blessing to marry or does the daughter just let her parents know she will get married or what? I assume that the man should ask the father, but I want to be sure how it is done properly and with respect. What advice would you give to help this conversation be more positive and successful? By the way, the father is college educated and owns a successful business in their province and the family is religious. Just out of curiosity, what if the parents refuse to provide the above-mentioned written document? While of course it is not the best way, can the couple get a waiver for this requirement? I am an American, but live in Asia not USA so I'm not going to get a fiance visa for her to USA. I will either marry her where I live if I can get her a tourist visa (she has a good job so it is possible but I know hard) or in Philippines if we cannot get her a visa to where I live. I have been to the Philippines about 20 times in the past 2 years. I have visited her in person many times, but just became more than friends since the end of May. By the way, I really want advice from Filipinos or others who have first hand experience with this. Thanks!

I am Desperate to learn Tagalog, for it is my Mothers Homeland Language, which makes it mine as well. I want to learn also, because my mom's side of her family likes to talk about me in Tagalog, and I can't understand a thing... LOL.

I am an American and have always been wondering why...

Personally, in my opinion I find it even more annoying when Filipinos try to speak full out English. I went to this mall once with my cousins and everytime I spoke back to them in Tagalog they spoke back to me in English... but the whole thing was just completely wrong... some of the grammar was off and i dont know... it just sounded like they were trying TOO hard, like forced, it just seemed very unnatural and made me want to leave.

I don't mind them speaking taglish because atleast they are incorporating some of their natural language into the speech but someone told me that its worse to speak in Taglish so I'm confused. Help!
Also my cousins are NOT rich. They didn't go to an international school and they also went to a bad college. They live in a countryside where pretty much everyone speaks tagalog. They JUST moved to Cebu City tho, like 4 months ago?

I may have spelled it wrong... sounds like "ah nu bah". I work with a lot of Filipinos, and I'm too embarrassed to ask, but that's one of the phrases I hear a LOT, especially among the girls when someone's teasing them.

And is there a good source for looking up phrases, pronunciation, and grammar? Thanks in advance.

I was cruising the comments on Youtube when I saw this very interesting comment by a user named "chopped_guy". He claims that Filipinos are misusing the word "artista", which obviously translates into "artist", to anyone who grabs a microphone or gets his/her face shown on television. Chopped_guy said further asks that...

"You wouldn't necessarily call a man who holds a paintbrush for the first time as an artist, so why should we call a basketball player, politician or an offspring of anyone famous who gets a role in a movie artista? Where's the art?

I've looked at the Official Olympic Reports and while Japan's torch bearer's name was written in it, the rest of the torch bearers in the Olympic Torch Relay from other countries weren't. Would anyone know who the Filipino torch bearer was? Or could anyone point me to a site that has a list of the torch relay members?

I always see Filipinos include the word "hindi" a lot when they write sentences. What does the tagalog word "Hindi" mean in English?

(I know Hindi is the language Indians use, but that's not what I'm referring to here).
